NHL Metropolitan Division Odds: Capitals Are Head and Shoulders Above the Rest

NHL Metropolitan Division Odds 2019-20 Season

The Washington Capitals have been the top team in the NHL past the halfway point of the 2019-20 season, and oddsmakers are projecting them to run away with the Metropolitan Division as a result.

At Bovada, the Caps are the odds-on -185 favorites to win the Metropolitan this year. The Pittsburgh Penguins (+200), New York Islanders (+2000), Carolina Hurricanes (+2000), Columbus Blue Jackets (+2800), Philadelphia Flyers (+4000), New York Rangers (+20000) and New Jersey Devils (+100000) are available at plus money at the shop.

Can Anyone Catch the Capitals?

As of January 28, the Capitals have the best record in the NHL at 34-11-5 SU and rank second in the league in goals for (181). Washington’s road record of 19-6-1 also ranks as tops in the league, while John Carlson (60 points) and Alex Ovechkin (50) are both in the top 20 in scoring.

Washington has won the Metropolitan for four years in a row and is in a prime spot to make it five straight come the spring. The emergence of Ilya Samsonov has given the Capitals a two-headed monster at the goaltending position, as the Russian (15-2-1, 2.06 goals-against average, .927 save percentage) and Braden Holtby (19-9-4, 3.05 GAA, .899 SV%) have combined to give Washington a reliable duo between the pipes.

Penguins Haven’t Lost a Step Despite Injuries

At this point in the campaign, the Penguins look to be the biggest challengers to the Caps for the Metropolitan banner. After getting swept in the first round of the playoffs a year ago by the Islanders, Pittsburgh has fared extremely well despite suffering a litany of injuries and is only six points behind the Capitals for the division lead as of this writing.

When glancing at the oddsboard, it’s clear the sportsbook believes only the Capitals and Penguins are true contenders for the division title, but the Islanders can’t be overlooked.

New York has proven that last year wasn’t a fluke by playing a lights-out defense-first system under head coach Barry Trotz. The Islanders have their work cut out for them to place first in the Metropolitan, but they’ve proven that they can’t be counted out at this point.
