Isles Have Had Rangers' Number in the Battle of the Big Apple

The battle for the Big Apple re-engages tonight with the Rangers looking for a rare consecutive win on their home ice against the crosstown rival Islanders. Not only have the Blueshirts been struggling to win at Madison Square Garden without Henrik Lundqvist, they’ve been absolutely atrocious against the Isles over the last two seasons.

SHARK BITES
  • The Rangers are 0-6 SU in their last 6 games at home.
  • The Islanders are 6-1 SU in their last 7 games against the Rangers.
  • The Rangers are 7-3 SU in the second half of their last 10 back-to-backs.

With the Isles losing four of their last five games, it’s safe to say that things have balanced out significantly for them since Doug Weight’s miraculous run when he first took over behind the Brooklyn bench. Their starting goalie, Thomas Greiss, has been a big part of this negative trend, posting a less than terrific .893 save percentage and a bloated 3.46 goals-against average in the month of March.

It’s not fair to place all the blame on Greiss with his team giving up over 31 shots per game this month but if he wants to help the Isles continue their dominance over the rival Rangers, he’ll have to step it up. His counterpart tonight, Antti Raanta, has a .920 save percentage this month but has been vulnerable in his nine home starts, allowing an average of 2.59 goals per game at MSG.

This one is as much of a toss-up as you can ask for but with the trends pointing toward the Isles and with the value landing on the side of the Brooklyn club, I think it would be foolish to fade them against a team that's on the second half of a doubleheader.
