Doug Weight Has the Islanders on a Roll

After a great run of results to start the new year, the Toronto Maple Leafs have fallen back down to earth – losing six of their last eight games – and will face an Islanders team tonight that’s flourished with a record of 8-2-2 since Doug Weight took over head coaching duties for the Brooklyn club.

SHARK BITES
  • Thomas Greiss has a .926 save percentage in 14 road games this season.
  • Frederik Andersen has an .876 save percentage and a 4.21 goals-against average in February.
  • The Maple Leafs are 2-5 SU in their last seven games against teams with losing records.

The biggest factor in the Leafs’ rise and almost immediate decline is their utter failure to keep the puck out of their own net. They’ve allowed 22 goals in their six games since the break and have been giving up an astounding 34.8 shots per game. Their power play and penalty kill have also seen a major drop-off since All-Star Weekend as they’ve allowed five PP goals and scored just three of their own in their six February games.

Doug Weight and the Islanders, however, are on the exact opposite end of the spectrum, posting a 93.3 percent penalty-kill rate along with a 26.3 percent efficiency with the man advantage this month. With a regulation win tonight, the Islanders will move into a playoff spot and that’s incredible considering they were in the Metro basement just over a month ago.

There’s some moneyline value on the Islanders tonight and when you consider everything, including their 7-2-1 record against the Leafs in their last 10, this seems like a good spot for a bet on John Tavares and the Isles.
