NHL Betting Preview and Odds

Tampa Bay will be a slight underdog when the Lightning fly into Philadelphia on Thursday night to face the Flyers.

Playing on no rest, this could be a spot to bet the home team, which traded one of its best players - Simon Gagne - to Tampa in the offseason.

The Lightning look to be much improved this season and are coming off a come-from-behind victory over the Montreal Canadians last night. The Flyers will be a -170 favorite over the Bolts, who will pay +150 for the upset. With still questionable goaltending on both teams, one has to like the 5.5-point OVER bet at -130. The Detroit Red Wings have started the season in impressive fashion and look like they’re the safest money Thursday night as the -135 favorite over the Dallas Stars.  The Stars have also won both of their previous games this year, but with the Franzen-Bertuzzi-Filppula line lighting it up right now the Stars will be in tough to get a point out this one.

Another good wager in this game is the 5.5-point OVER bet that will pay even money.

The Edmonton Oilers will get another chance to show that they’re for real when they fly into Minnesota to take on the Wild on Thursday night. This game looks like your best shot at an upset victory, with the upstart Oilers coming in as the +110 underdog.

The Wild have not looked good in their two games so far this season, and they could be missing Andrew Brunette and Marek Zidlicky from the lineup. The UNDER bet on the 5.5 total looks like the way to go when you consider the fact that the Wild have only managed to score twice in their two previous games this season.

The Calgary Flames will play host to the Florida Panthers on Thursday and will be a heavy -160 favorite. Calgary still seems to have a problem scoring goals, as do the Panthers, so the UNDER bet is the only way to go; even with a total of only 5 goals. Besides the low scoring, both teams have shown a decent defensive system so far that should contribute to an UNDER bet edge.

Carolina will be in Ottawa to take on a Senators team that has lost all three of their games this year. The Sens have allowed 10 goals against in only three games and are looking for some production from top offensive players Jason Spezza, Alexei Kovalev and Daniel Alfredsson.

Carolina has won both of their games so far, only allowing two goals per game. The 5.5-goal total pays -120 on the UNDER bet, and considering all of Ottawa’s offensive woes it’s tough to place an OVER wager on this game.
