NHL: December's Best & Worst Bets

Jagr Panthers

December was a surprising month for one of the NHL’s most under the radar teams, while several Stanley Cup favorites stumbled their way through the month. Here’s a look at the best and worst of the NHL from a betting perspective in December.

Best and Worst Teams to Bet on

Here’s a sentence you’ve probably never heard before—The Florida Panthers could have made you rich! The Panthers entered the month with just 10 wins, but along with the Washington Capitals, they went a league best 11-3. Not much was expected of the Panthers this season, as not much is ever expected of the Panthers because people barely know they exist, but if you wagered a $100 on each of their games in December, Jaromir Jagr and company would have led you to $912.77 in profits.

After dominating the NHL for the first two months of the season, the Montreal Canadiens fell off a cliff in December, posting a league worst record of 3-11. Canadiens fans were seeing red during the month, and they definitely put their backers in the red. Had you bet $100 on each of their games during the month, they would have put you $826.84 in debt. That’s enough money to buy a really crappy car!

Another team who couldn’t carry a strong start into December was the New York Rangers, who were -$616.38 based on betting $100 on each of their games. That’s enough money for a decent set of winter tires for the really crappy car.

Best OVER/UNDER Teams in December

The NHL’s top OVER team during the month was the San Jose Sharks who went OVER in 10 of their 13 games. The Sharks only averaged 2.6 goals per game in December, but their leaky defense allowed four or more goals eight times. High scoring games continued for the Sharks as they were the second best OVER team in November.

The Minnesota Wild were December’s top UNDER team, posting an O/U record of 3-10-1. Seven of their games saw three or less total goals, while they allowed one or less goals seven times.

The league posted an overall O/U record of 88-97-21 in December.

Biggest Upsets of December

Usually when you’re on a list like this, you’re not a very good team. That’s definitely the case here, as the five teams that pulled off the biggest upsets in the month aren’t what you’d call a sure thing. Unless maybe if you’re calling them a sure thing to lose.
