NHL Free Agency Prop Betting Odds: Where Will The Chips Land?

NHL Free Agency Prop Betting Odds

July 1, a time when people are enjoying BBQs and ice-cold beverages. In Canada, they are celebrating the date they became a country.

But for hockey fans, this is the day that your favorite franchise might sign the hottest unrestricted free agent on the market or perhaps land one of your favorite players to help bring your team to the next level and inch closer to a Stanley Cup. And for us betting folk, it’s yet another opportunity to cash in on the NHL before the season starts in October with some prop odds on free agency.

Where Will Artemi Panarin Sign?

The 2016 Calder Trophy winner, Panarin has been consistent and durable through his first four seasons in the NHL. The winger has never played fewer than 79 games in a season over that span and has career totals of 116 goals and 320 points, including a career-high 87 points last year with Columbus. Nicknamed “Bread Man,” he said midway through the 2018-19 season that he wanted to test free agency, but that there would still be a chance he signs in Columbus.

Panarin’s teammate and countryman Sergei Bobrovsky appears to also be leaving the Blue Jackets and they share an agent, meaning the two could be a package deal on July 1. Much like Bobrovsky, Panarin is favored to go to the Florida Panthers at -115. The New York Rangers are second on the oddsboard to land the Russian at +215, but I think he wants to go to a contending team and if the Panthers were to land Bobrovsky, Panarin would be a nice addition to a crop of young talent.

Panthers Are Looking for a New Goalie

News broke on June 26 that veteran netminder Roberto Luongo would not be returning to play with the Florida Panthers in the 2019-20 season and has chosen to retire. This leaves a vacancy in the Panthers crease and luckily for them, there’s a top goaltender on the market and they are the -280 favorites to land him.

Sergei Bobrovsky has spent the last seven seasons of his career with the Columbus Blue Jackets and led them to a four-game sweep over the Tampa Bay Lightning in the playoffs this year, which secured the first second-round appearance for Columbus in franchise history. The two-time Vezina Trophy winner didn’t exactly see eye-to-eye with head coach John Tortorella and it was basically a foregone conclusion that he was leaving the city at the end of his contract and all signs point to Florida.

A Lock Play?

Although this bet may not send you into early retirement at -150 odds, it does seem like a pretty smart wager this offseason: Over $59.5 million for the largest deal in free agency. Over the last four years, there has been at least one contract signed for $59.5 million or more. There are some big names available in this year’s free agency to be signed that could fetch over that value this year.

Matt Duchene is coming off his first 70-point season since the 2013-14 season and is also at the end of a five-year, $30-million contract. The 28-year-old center could be poised to sign a long-term deal with his new team and I can only assume he’s going to get an uptick in his salary, perhaps in the range of $8 million to $9 million annually.

Sergei Bobrovsky is coming off a four-year deal with a cap hit of $7.425 million. The star goaltender could get a big payday at this point in his career and the favorite Florida Panthers have a lot of money to spend.
