NHL Playoffs Series Prices

Alex Pietrangelo celebrates with the Stanley Cup

When the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered the NHL in mid-March, it appeared the remainder of the season would be lost and we wouldn’t have any action until the fall. Well, as the curve starts to flatten, the NHL and the NHLPA have come to an agreement for an expanded 24-team playoff – with 12 squads from each conference – to be hosted by two hub cities to finally crown a 2020 Stanley Cup champion.

The top four teams from the Eastern and Western conferences based on winning percentage will get byes into the first round, though they will play among themselves to get their legs under them and determine seedings. The teams ranked 5-12 in each conference will face off in shortened best-of-five play-in series to advance into the first round.

Online sportsbook Bovada has released series prices for each of the 5-12 matchups which are listed below.

  • Pittsburgh won two of the three meetings with Montreal this season and the total went UNDER each game.
  • The Penguins should get a big boost with top-line winger Jake Guentzel returning to the lineup from what appeared to be a season-ending shoulder injury.
  • Watch out for Montreal goalie Carey Price. The Habs won five of seven games following the all-star break and he had a .943 save percentage over that span. So this time off may do wonders for him.

  • New York won all four meetings with Carolina this season and their last one in 2018-19. The total has gone UNDER in four of the last six games between these teams.
  • The stoppage in play may come as a positive for the Rangers as they had given up a total of 29 goals over their previous seven games so the rest may help their young goalies.
  • Carolina had three defensemen, Brett Pesce, Dougie Hamilton and Sami Vatanen, get placed on the IR during the stop in play. Although Hamilton and Vatanen should be good to go, keep an eye on how they perform coming off injuries.

  • Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky played 16 of 19 games from mid-January to late February and fatigue may have gotten to him as he didn’t play the final four games before the COVID break.
  • After a terrific first half, New York was one of the worst teams in the league in the second half, dropping 11 of its last 13 games, including seven straight before the stop in play.

  • These teams split their two-game season series with one road win apiece. They have averaged a combined score of 6.5 goals over their last six meetings.
  • Toronto was ravaged by injuries prior to the pandemic, with three defensemen and two forwards on the IR. The return of Jake Muzzin, Morgan Rielly and Ilya Mikheyev to the lineup will be a big boost.
  • Columbus goalie and rookie of the year candidate Elvis Merzlikins caught fire from late December into early February, winning 12 of 14 games, but he hit a wall with the club losing 12 of its last 15 games before the coronavirus.

  • A healthy Connor McDavid is definitely a game-changer. Arguably the best player in the game missed seven games this season and was dealing with a shoulder injury in mid-March. He had 97 points in 64 games.
  • Chicago allowed the fourth-most goals against in the West this season, though goalie Corey Crawford played the final 10 games of the season and had a respectable 2.41 GAA over that span.

  • Arizona’s leading goal scorer, Conor Garland, was injured in the final game before the break and was expected to miss three weeks. The time off should allow him to return healthy. The ’Yotes allowed the second-fewest goals against in the West.
  • After having just one winning streak of three or more games through the first four and a half months, Nashville had three three-game winning streaks over its last 14 games.

  • Winnipeg scored a 2-1 overtime home victory over Calgary in the one and only meeting between the two this year, which came in October. The total has gone UNDER in five of the last six games between the Jets and Flames.
  • Calgary was just getting healthy with 2019 Norris Trophy winner Mark Giordano returning for the final six games and fellow defenseman Travis Hamonic, who had been out since early February, was close to returning and will be good to go now.
  • Winnipeg had been on a four-game winning streak before the pandemic. Bryan Little scored the OT winner vs Calgary in October but has been out with a season-ending ear injury since early November. Could he return and boost the strength down the middle for this squad?
