Olympic Hockey Betting Preview

Four years ago in Turin the USA women’s hockey team had their drive for gold stopped by a shocking loss to Sweden. Today in Vancouver the women get a shot at revenge. Today’s women’s hockey semifinal matchups are exactly the same as they were in Turin – USA vs. Sweden and Canada vs. Finland.

In Turin everyone expected another USA-Canada showdown in the gold medal game, but Sweden delivered a shocking 3-2 victory behind an outstanding performance from goaltender Kim Martin. The chances of Sweden delivering another upset in Vancouver look slim to none. Over at Bovada the latest odds on the game are giving the USA a 7.5-goal spread at (-115). If you think the Swedes can pull off another upset, or at least lose by fewer than eight goals they can be had at -125. Through the preliminary round the Americans went 3-0 while outscoring their opposition 31-1. Sweden went 2-1 while being outscored 15-10 due to a 13-1 loss to Canada. Canada’s going for their third-straight women’s hockey gold and likely looks at Finland as simply a stopover before advancing to the gold medal game. Like the USA, Canada is a -7.5 goal favorite versus Finland at -115 at BetUS. Finland, who lost to Canada 6-0 in Turin, is available at -125 as a 7.5-goal underdog.

Men’s Olympic hockey odds The men’s hockey tournament doesn’t resume until Tuesday with the qualification round. The most watched game in this round will be host country Canada versus Germany. The Canadians were forced into the qualification round after their 5-3 upset loss to USA on Sunday night. The Canadians should have no problem getting past Germany, although they haven’t been especially sharp in their last two games with a shootout win versus Switzerland and the loss to the USA Whoever does win this game gets a tough matchup in the quarterfinals versus the high-powered Russia. The other three qualification matchups on the Tuesday schedule include Switzerland versus Belarus, Czech Republic versus Latvia and Slovakia versus Norway. The favorites will obviously be the Swiss the Czechs and the Slovaks. Awaiting the winners of those games in the quarterfinals will be the USA, Finland and Sweden.

The matchups will be the winner of Switzerland-Belarus against the USA, the winner of Czech Republic-Latvia versus Finland and the winner of Slovakia-Norway against Sweden.
