Penguins Underdogs To Extend Road Win Streak

The Pittsburgh Penguins (10-7-4) will try to run their road winning streak to five games Monday when they visit the Calgary Flames (12-4-5) as small underdogs at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. The Penguins had their five-game overall winning streak snapped Saturday with a 6-3 home loss to the Montreal Canadiens as -230 favorites, but they open a five-game road trip against the Flames and have enjoyed success there.

Sportsbook Odds Analysis

The moneyline has gone on a roller-coaster ride since Sportsbook with Calgary at -140. There was some early support for Pittsburgh, as the line came down to -126 on Sunday at some books before rising back up to -143 later in the day. For whatever reason, the Penguins have been a better team on the road at 5-2-2 compared to 5-5-2 at home, including four consecutive wins. The Flames have also performed a lot better on the road with a 9-2-2 mark compared to 3-2-3 at the Saddledome.

As of Sunday, Calgary led the NHL in goal differential at plus-28, with most of the damage being done away from home. The Flames saw their four-game winning streak end Saturday too with a 4-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets as -175 home chalk after three of those victories took place on the road.

Pittsburgh News & Notes

Pittsburgh surrendered five goals in the third period vs Montreal in that disappointing setback, but goaltender Casey DeSmith gave up just three of them overall because three were empty-netters. DeSmith was starting in net for the first time since November 13 when he gave up five goals in a 6-3 road loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Still, the Penguins fired 50 shots on Canadiens goalie Jake Allen, and they should have regular starter Tristan Jarry (10-4-3, 1.91 goals-against average) back between the pipes here. Jarry has been one of the best goalies in the NHL lately, reeling off five straight wins, including three shutouts, and allowing only two goals total during that impressive stretch.

Calgary News & Notes

Calgary had a similar lapse at home vs Winnipeg, allowing four unanswered goals after taking an early 2-0 lead in the first period. Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom (8-4-4, 1.81 GAA) had a rare off night against the Jets, who became just the second team to score three goals off him in his last eight starts.

Calgary backup Dan Vladar (4-0-1, 1.57 GAA) has been superlative in relief of Markstrom this year, giving the team a reliable option off the bench. In fact, Vladar has turned in shutouts in each of his past two starts for the Flames while Markstrom leads the league with five.

Jarry is tied for second with his three shutouts, so goals could be at a premium in this one if he starts.

How Pittsburgh Will Win

Pittsburgh can win if the team continues to ride Jarry in this spot to open this trip. The Penguins have been very successful away from home so far this season, and a lot of that has to do with Jarry’s performance recently. He has started 17 of their 21 games.

How Calgary Will Win

The good news for Calgary is that it does not really matter who gets the nod in goal because both Markstrom and Vladar have been great. The key for the Flames is scoring three goals or more – they have won six games in a row when that has happened.
