Rangers Senators Playoff Odds

The New York Rangers may have missed out on winning the President's Trophy, but they'll still begin  the NHL playoffs as the top seed in the Eastern Conference when they take on the eighth-seeded Ottawa Senators in a first-round series starting Thursday.

As of Tuesday afternoon WilliamHill.com is listing New York as a -180 favorite for Thursday's series opener (7 pm Eastern, NHLN, CBC), with Ottawa getting +160. And the 'over/under' sits at five (O -125/U +105).

Looking a little more long-term Bovada is listing the Rangers -230 favorites to win this series, with the Senators getting +190 to pull the upset. Bovada is also lining New York at 9/4 to win the Eastern Conference and 7/1 to win the Stanley Cup, while Ottawa is getting 16/1 to win the East and 35/1 to win the Cup.

The Rangers won the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference by one point over Pittsburgh, although a loss in their season finale left them two points behind Vancouver in the President's Trophy standings.

New York only ranked 13th in the league in scoring but only two teams allowed fewer goals. Much of that defensive success can be attributed to G Henrik Lundqvist and his 1.97 GAA.

Ottawa might have been the most pleasant surprise in the league this season. Widely expected to finish near the bottom in the East, the Sens instead went 41-31-10 to claim the eight seed. They did so mainly by ranking fourth in the league in scoring. Problem is, they also gave up more goals than all but six other teams.

These two teams might be on opposite ends of the seedings spectrum, but Ottawa took three of four games from New York during the regular season (one in a shootout), outscoring the Blueshirts 13-8.

The Rangers, who will host Games 1 and 2 and, if it goes that far, Game 7, went 27-12-2 at home this season, while the Senators went a respectable 21-14-6 on the road.

But Ottawa was worse at home than on the road, going 20-17-4 at Scotiabank Place, while New York went 24-12-5 on the road.
