In this evening’s final game, we have the Sharks heading north to take on the Oilers in Edmonton in a Pacific Division matchup. Connor McDavid and the rest of the Oilers owned this series in the regular season, beating the Sharks three straight times including a 4-2 win just under a week ago when the two met in San Jose.
Edmonton’s claim to fame this season was its immense success over division rivals. The Oilers went 20-6-3 overall but where they did their best work was at Rogers Place, where they earned a sparkling 12-2-1 record against teams in the Pacific. The significant favorite tonight, the Oilers will want to set a precedent for success at home throughout the playoffs and I expect them to come flying out of the gates.
As for the Sharks, the second half of the season was ugly. Their goalies posted a team save percentage of just .907 in the final 31 games and their offense dried up completely with players in and out of the lineup. Their big guns will have to show up in this series if the Sharks want to match the energy of the Oilers’ captain.
Edmonton’s defense is much better than it’s perceived and this is where I expect Adam Larsson to really show his value. The Oilers scored an average of 3.07 goals per game in their last 30 games so Larsson’s blocked shots and possession domination will be much appreciated by the boys doing the work up front.
The Taylor Hall trade was a good one and you’re about to see exactly why.
