Who Has the Edge in Game 5?

Things looked dire for the St. Louis Blues after a deflating 7-2 home loss in Game 3, but the Blues answered the call in a big way in Game 4 in the form of a 4-2 victory over the Boston Bruins to tie the Stanley Cup Final up at two games apiece. Sportsbooks opened the Blues as +135 road underdogs with a total of 5.5 for Game 5.

Standout Stats

  • The Bruins could be without the services of Zdeno Chara, as the towering defenseman suffered a broken jaw in Game 4. As of Thursday morning, Chara’s status for Game 5 was ruled a game-time decision.
  • Fellow Boston defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, who missed the past two games, practiced in a non-contact jersey Wednesday but remains in concussion protocol.
  • The Blues have been road warriors in the playoffs, going 8-3 SU away from home, including a 3-2 overtime triumph over Boston in Game 2.
  • Boston could use a jump-start in production from its second line of Jake DeBrusk, David Krejci and David Backes. The unit has combined for only two assists in the Stanley Cup Final.
  • Is another OVER in store in this series? The Bruins and Blues have combined to go OVER in three of the four Stanley Cup Final games so far with an average combined score of 6.5 goals.
  • The possible absence of Chara has been the biggest story heading into Game 5, but Boston has fared well without its captain in the past. The Bruins are 5-1 SU and on the puckline in their past six contests without the veteran.

My Best Bet for Blues-Bruins

OVER 5.5 goals

I’ve been backing the OVER in every game of this series and I’m not going to stray away from that strategy in Game 5. Led by two goals from Ryan O’Reilly, the Blues found their offensive groove in Game 4 and had no issues beating Tuukka Rask.

St. Louis could have more space to move around without the six-foot-nine Chara looming on the back end and the Bruins will be motivated to bounce back after a poor showing in Missouri, so take the OVER 5.5 goals in this one.
