Stanley Cup Odds: The Favorites
Colorado Avalanche (+450)
Could they do it again? We don’t see why not.
While the Avs are going to lose some key players that could include the likes of Nazem Kadri, Valeri Nichushkin, Andre Burakovsky, Josh Manson and others, they will have their core of stars intact with Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Gabriel Landeskog, Devon Toews, Bowan Byram and Mikko Rantanen all returning.
Goaltending is a question again for the Avs with starter Darcy Kuemper a pending UFA, but they have faced and answered that question in the past.
The bottom line is this team has the star power, quality coaching and forward-thinking management to make another run next year. They will also have plenty of cap space to re-sign players or bring in replacements.
However, +450 odds aren’t long enough to bet on the Avs without seeing how some of their offseason shakes out.
Stanley Cup Odds: Best Bet
There are lots of good teams in the NHL and it’s not hard to make a case for any of them in Stanley Cup odds to be next season’s winners.
The Tampa Bay Lightning will be returning all of their star players, including the best goalie in the world and multiple Hart Trophy candidates. They will, however, likely lose two key playoff performers from this season in Ondrej Palat and Nick Paul.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will be strong next year with superstars throughout the lineup, though they do face a serious question in net.
The Florida Panthers will return most of their top players after winning the Presidents’ Trophy and should again be one of the better teams in the East.
The New York Rangers have an elite goalie and some high-end talent signed long term.
Edmonton has two of the best four or five hockey players on the planet and will likely be aggressive in upgrading around them.
But the team we have our eye on in Stanley Cup odds did something this season that none of the teams listed above did: miss the playoffs.
The Vegas Golden Knights made it to the conference finals or Stanley Cup Final in three of their four years in existence before missing the playoffs by five points this season and we’re betting they get back in the dance next year.
The team has some cap problems and a question mark in net but also has some serious star power and just hired one of the best coaches in the league in former Bruins bench boss Bruce Cassidy.
The Knights’ lost season in 2022 can largely be attributed to injury as essentially all of the team’s top players missed extended time, but that injury luck will surely improve next year and give the Knights a chance to rebound.
With a full season of Jack Eichel upcoming, the Knights will sport an elite forward group that also includes captain Mark Stone, Max Pacioretty, Jonathan Marchessault and others along with multiple high-level defenders such as Alex Pietrangelo and Shea Theodore.
This is one of the best teams on paper in the league, and we love them at +1500, considerably longer odds than teams like Carolina, Florida and Edmonton that aren’t necessarily any better.
What Is A Futures Bet On Stanley Cup Odds?
Before hockey season starts, oddsmakers release their lines on each team’s chance of winning the shiny championship trophy. If you were to place a wager at any point before the Stanley Cup Final, you would be making a futures bet. This is a bet that deals with events that will happen in time. For instance, you could bet on the Detroit Red Wings to win the Cup in September, but you would not see the results of your bet until the postseason.
How To Read NHL Stanley Cup Odds
At your sportsbook of choice, you’ll see Stanley Cup odds listed like this:
Tampa Bay Lightning +300
Toronto Maple Leafs +450
Vegas Golden Knights +500
Boston Bruins +800
Unlike a moneyline bet where there is a clear favorite and underdog, for an NHL futures bet, you would consider the team with the lowest odds as the fave. In this case, it’s Tampa. The team with the highest odds would be the dog. For this example, it’s Boston.
Let’s say hockey season is about to start and you’ve done your research. You believe that it’s Toronto’s year, so you lay down $40 on the Leafs to win the Cup. If they do win it all, you’d see a payout of $220 – your original $40 is returned along with your winnings of $180.
You can use our Odds Calculator to figure out what you’d win based on the amount you bet and the odds.
When it comes to futures, get in on the action early. The closer it gets to the NHL playoffs, the more the odds will shift. Oddsmakers update the lines for these bets frequently as teams slip and fall in the standings. Injuries, trades and coaching changes will affect a team’s odds of making it to the Cup Final, and those who set the lines take that into consideration when updating the odds.
As mentioned above, it’s important to keep in mind that when you make your NHL futures picks, you won’t see a return until Lord Stanley’s Cup is awarded to the winner.
