UNDER has been solid play when Lightning visit Boston

Jake DeBrusk Andrei Vasilevskiy NHL Hockey Betting Preview Tampa Bay Lightning vs Boston Bruins

Two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference face off Thursday night in Boston as the Bruins tangle with the Tampa Bay Lightning – and only one of these teams is playing like it is worthy of a spot in the conference final. The Bruins roll in with five victories over their first six games, while the Lightning have yet to put together back-to-back solid games.

  • Opening Odds: Tampa Bay -104 / Boston -118 | O/U 6 (Line History)

Opening Odds Analysis

The Bruins open this one as ever-so-slight favorites, marking just the second time in the Lightning’s first seven games that they are the underdog (they trounced the host Toronto Maple Leafs 7-3 at -105 back on October 10).

Tampa Bay News & Notes

The Lightning had been hemorrhaging goals at an alarming rate before going into Montreal and stifling an impressive Canadiens offense en route to a 3-1 victory. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 33 saves to preserve the victory, which improved the Lightning to 2-3 on their six-game road trip that mercifully concludes Thursday night at TD Garden.

Yet, while most of the Lightning’s struggles can be traced to the back end, there are a handful of forwards that also need to improve if Tampa Bay hopes to return to prominence. Alex Killorn and Yanni Gourde are both looking for their first goals of the season, while Patrick Maroon has tallied just once in his first six games.

Boston News & Notes

The Bruins have no concerns in their back end, having limited opponents to just 10 goals through their opening six games. The sensational tandem of Tuukka Rask (3-0-0, 1.33 GAA) and Jaroslav Halak (2-1-0, 1.69 GAA) already has a pair of shutouts on its ledger while boasting a combined .949 save percentage through the opening six games.

That said, not all is perfect in Beantown. Scoring depth has been a significant issue for Boston, with David Pastrnak (six) and Brad Marchand (four) having accounted for 10 of the Bruins' 16 goals so far this season. Of particular concern: David Krejci has been held to a single assist in five games after racking up 73 points a season ago.

Betting Pick: UNDER

Both teams boast elite defensive units (though the Lightning haven’t showed it much so far) and should be able to limit the other’s offensive opportunities. Expect a close, tight-checking affair.
