Pivotal Game 5 on Tap Between Leafs and Bruins

Leafs vs Bruins Betting Odds April 19, 2019

The stakes and pressure keep growing after each game of the first round series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins and with Game 5 tonight, all eyes will be on the Leafs to see how they respond to their Game 4 loss. The Leafs drew first blood with a Game 1 win in Boston but have not been historically good at TD Garden with losses in seven of their last nine trips to Bean Town.

The Bruins opened as -140 favorites with a total of 6.

Maple Leafs vs Bruins Game Center

  • Leafs’ goaltender Frederik Anderson may not be the reason the Leafs win this series but so far, he hasn’t been the liability to crush their hopes. Freddie has allowed 12 goals in four games of this series and as he goes, so does the Leafs. In the two Toronto wins, he’s only allowed three goals on 74 shots and was a wall in Game 1 when the Leafs stole the opener. This is a sharp contrast compared to last year’s playoffs when he gave up 13 goals through the first four games of the series and had to be pulled in both games in Boston.
  • Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask wasn’t sharp in Game 4 but he didn’t need to be. The Finnish netminder allowed four goals on 42 shots but the Bruins gave him a large cushion with six goals so he didn’t need to stand on his head. Rask has been solid with his bend-don’t-break approach and although he’s allowed 11 goals through four games of the series, his save percentage is stellar at .921 as the Leafs have peppered him with shots.
  • The Bruins’ top line of Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak had been quiet for portions of this series but came out big in Game 4. The trio combined for three goals and six points in the decisive win and have 12 points thus far in the series.
  • The Leafs have had some lapses in judgment in this series (Nazem Kadri, anyone?) and they’ve been getting burned when having a man in the box. The Leafs have only taken 11 minor penalties in four games but the Bruins have scored five times on the powerplay in this series. The Bruins are in a similar spot with only 11 minor penalties but they’ve held the Leafs to only three goals when with the man-advantage. Discipline will be key in deciding Game 5 and according to TSN, in the NHL's history of best-of-seven series tied at 2-2, winners of Game 5 hold an all-time series record of 205-55 (.788).
  • There’s a lot of UNDER trends coming into this matchup with three of the four games of this series going UNDER the closing total. It’s also hit in four of the last five games in this matchup and seven of the Leafs’ last nine games overall. Not to be outdone, the UNDER has also hit in five of the Bruins’ last seven games at home.

My Best Bet for Leafs vs Bruins

I almost took Bruins -1.5 on the puckline but I’m worried about the Leafs’ speed to be able to rely on Boston to win by two goals. The Bruins and Leafs have only had one game where their offenses exploded and with the stakes tonight, I expect a gritty game with minimal mistakes to ensure neither team goes down by two goals. If you’re not a fan of the total, throw Boston’s moneyline in a parlay.
