Maple Leafs Look to Exorcise Game 7 Demons vs Bruins

It is only fitting that the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins go the distance in their Sportsbook-round matchup as Game 7 goes from TD Garden. Boston avoided elimination by doubling up Toronto 4-2 in Game 6 at Scotiabank Arena. The Maple Leafs have won two of the previous three games at TD Garden in this series but are a +120 underdog with the Bruins coming back at -140 and the total Sportsbook at 5.5 goals.

Standout Stats

  • This has been a back-and-forth series with each team earning two wins on the other’s home ice and neither team has won back-to-back games. At TD Garden, Toronto has outscored Boston 7-6 and most recently edged the B’s 2-1 in Game 5 there.
  • Tonight’s total has been set at 5.5 goals, a half-goal lower than it has been through the previous six games, which had totals set at 6. Four of those contests went UNDER, including all three at TD Garden.
  • Boston’s top line of Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron has improved as this series has gone on, racking up a combined eight goals and 19 points to account for 44.4 percent of the Bruins’ total goals. In the three games that Toronto has won, that line accounted for just one goal and three points. Meanwhile, the Leafs’ top line of Mitch Marner, Andreas Johnsson and John Tavares has combined for four goals and 12 points, but three of those goals and four points came in Game 1. Auston Matthews was held pointless in the first two games but has scored in every game since for a total of five goals and six points.
  • Both netminders have been playing well in this series, as Tuukka Rask holds a .921 save percentage and a 2.54 goals-against average for the Bruins, while Frederik Andersen sports a .925 save percentage and a 2.70 GAA for the Leafs.
  • The Leafs will really have to be disciplined in this game as the Boston power play is clicking at 43.8 percent, accounting for seven goals on 16 opportunities. Meanwhile, Toronto’s pp unit is hitting at just 21.4 percent.
  • Last year, Toronto and Boston went to Game 7 in their Sportsbook-round matchup at TD Garden and the Leafs carried a 4-3 lead into the third period before a collapse led the B’s to move on to the second round with a 7-4 victory. Flash back to 2013, when Toronto had a 4-1 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third period of Game 7 at TD Garden, but once again an epic comeback for the Bruins led to a 5-4 overtime loss for the Leafs. Are we in for another wild third period in Game 7 at the Garden between these two Original Six teams?

I think the Leafs learned a lot from last year’s Game 7 collapse and I think the narrative heading into this game had they hung on and won the series in 2018 would have been completely different. The key to victory is simply to shut down the Bruins’ top line, which hasn’t been able to string together back-to-back good games yet – of course, that is much easier said than done. The depth of Toronto, notably Auston Matthews, has owned the depth of Boston so all eyes should be on the top line matchups.
