Battle of Ontario to be Headlined by Youth Movement

The Leafs and Sens get the first game of the new NHL season tonight as the two teams meet for the 109th time since Ottawa joined the league as an expansion team in 1992. Toronto was swept in the Battle of Ontario last season but the Leafs are a new team, committed to their youth movement. This matchup is likely going to be an exciting, high-flying affair all season long.

SHARK BITES
  • The Maple Leafs are 0-7 in their last 7 games as a moneyline underdog of 113 or less.
  • The total has gone OVER in 4 of the Maple Leafs' last 5 games on the road against the Senators.
  • The Maple Leafs are 0-4 in their last 4 games on the road against the Senators.

Toronto posted a league-low 69 points last year and is going to have a long adjustment period with first- and second-year players filling major roles on the team. The Maple Buds, as many endearingly call them, have a ton of potential at the back end – but not much experience. It’s rare that young defensemen succeed right away in the NHL so it’s probably still going to be at least a year before players like Nikita Zaitsev, Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner figure out how to lock down an opposing attack.

Frederik Andersen and Craig Anderson will get the starts for their respective clubs tonight as Freddy makes his first regular season appearance for his new squad. He had a modest .826 save percentage in the preseason after posting a .923 save percentage and 2.30 goals-against average last season. The Dane will live and die by the defenders in front of him this season but should be able to steal a few wins as he has the capability of standing on his head from time to time.

The Sens have been a team on the rise for the last couple of years and this could be their breakout year. That said, they do have a ceiling; Ottawa still lacks the depth to compete against the top teams in the East. The Maple Leafs, however, are not one of those teams – Ottawa takes this one tonight, and they could do it by a couple of goals.
