The Vegas Golden Knights are just one win away from accomplishing the unthinkable. With a victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals Sunday, the Knights will book a trip to the Stanley Cup finals in their first season. If the Knights can close this series out, they will become the first expansion team since 1968 to make it all the way to the finals.
History suggests that Vegas fans have plenty to be excited about, as teams that take a 3-1 series lead in conference finals/NHL semifinals have ultimately moved on 41 of 42 times. The lone exception was the New Jersey Devils in 2000 when Martin Brodeur and company won three straight to beat the Philadelphia Flyers.
That first goal is going to be absolutely critical in Game 5 with the Knights and Jets holding a combined 8-1 record when scoring first this postseason. Vegas has scored the first goal in each of the past three games and ultimately outscored Winning 10-5 in those outings.
For the Jets, they need to solve the riddle that is Marc Andre-Fleury. Fleury has been sensational during the postseason, posting a 1.72 GAA and a .945 save percentage. And it is not like the Jets have not been testing Knights’ goalie with Winnipeg putting 103 shots on net during the three losses in this series.
