Washington Aims to Light the Lamp vs Lowly Anaheim

The Washington Capitals play the third in their six-game road swing as they visit the Honda Center to face off with the Anaheim Ducks. Washington is looking to string together wins for the first time since early February, while Anaheim continues to tread water. The Ducks edged the Caps 6-5 in early December but are a +165 underdog tonight with Washington coming back at -190 and the total Sportsbook at 5.5 goals.

Capitals are struggling to find consistency

Washington had a rough January, going just 3-6-3, including a seven-game losing slide from mid-to-late January. Perhaps rest is all that was needed as the Caps have shown signs of life since the All-Star break going 5-2-1 and is coming off an impressive 5-1 victory at the SAP Center over San Jose on Thursday.

Scoring has come with ease for Washington this season as it has filled the net with 3.34 goals per game which are the seventh-most in the league. This trend continues on the road where it buries 3.33 goals per game which are the sixth most. Surprisingly, though, it only directs 29.7 shots towards the opposing goal on the road which hare the ninth-fewest in the NHL.

However, the Capitals have had to dig the puck out of their own net a little too often as they give up the 10th-most goals against per game at 3.16. That being said, they have surrendered 2.75 goals against since the All-Star break. Braden Holtby will be deflecting the pucks tonight and he has been great since the All-Star Game, sporting a 3-2-1 record with an impressive 2.35 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.

Ducks can’t buy a goal

It has been an absolute horror show for Anaheim recently, collecting just three wins since Dec. 18 and just one win since the All-Star break. The Ducks did earn a victory in their first home post-break edging Vancouver 1-0 but promptly followed that up with a 3-0 loss to Boston two days later.

Finding the back of the net has been like searching for a needle in a haystack for the Ducks as they are averaging just 2.16 goals per game this season which is dead last in the league by a large margin. Things take a slight uptick at the Honda Center where they chip in 2.32 goals per game which is still bottom of the barrel.

Anaheim hasn’t had much success keeping pucks out of the net either which is a recipe for disaster as it allows 3.16 goals against per game, tied with Washington for the 10th-most in the NHL. It does slightly better at home by surrendering 2.96 goals per game ranking 14th. However, there may be some positives in the future as Kevin Boyle, who will likely be the netminder tonight, has gone 1-1-0 in his first two starts with an impressive 1.51 goals against average and a .955 save percentage.

Is an UNDER in store for tonight’s game?

We have the lowest scoring team in the league facing off with a goalie that appears to be peaking and Sportsbook has the total Sportsbook at 5.5 goals. Anaheim hasn’t scored more than three goals in a game since Jan. 11 when it buried four vs Pittsburgh and it has averaged just one goal per game over its last nine contests.

The total has gone UNDER in eight of the Ducks’ last 12 games with an average combined score of 5.09. Meanwhile, Washington has gone OVER in seven of its last 11 games with an average combined score of 7.55. I think if the OVER is coming in this game then Washington will need to score five goals, not sure if that’s going to happen, I like the UNDER.

My take on Washington vs Anaheim

I like Washington on the -1.5 puckline. Braden Holtby appears to be hitting his stride since the All-Star break limiting opponents to a 2.35 goals against average and a .926 save percentage. Meanwhile, Anaheim is averaging just one goal per game over its last nine contests and rank dead last in the league in goals for this season.

Additionally, the Ducks are 1-8 SU and ATS in their last nine and are surrendering 4.44 goals against per game, while the Capitals score the sixth-most road goals per game this season at 3.33.
