Capitals and Predators Love Going OVER Totals

The Nashville Predators and Washington Capitals have been near the top of their conferences all season long, but both clubs will be looking to avoid a three-game losing streak when they collide in the Music City tonight. Sportsbooks opened the Preds as -150 home favorites with a total of 5.5.

SHARK BITES
  • The total has gone OVER in nine of the Capitals’ last 11 games vs the Predators (avg. combined score: 6.91).
  • The Capitals are 5-1 SU and 6-0 ATS in their last six games on the road vs teams with winning records.
  • The Capitals are 0-5 SU and ATS in their last five games vs the Predators (avg. losing margin: 2.2).

Forsberg has been great since returning from injury

Nashville concluded a 3-1-2 SU road trip with consecutive defeats, with the latter coming in the form of a 6-3 setback to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. The loss ended a seven-game point streak (5-0-2) for the Predators. Filip Forsberg has been on a tear for Nashville, as the winger has notched two-goal performances in two of his last three games. Since returning from an upper-body injury, the Swede’s four goals in as many games has helped him reclaim the team lead with 18.

The Capitals are coming off losses to the St. Louis Blues and Columbus Blue Jackets, and the power play has been a major reason for their recent struggles. Washington was 1-for-3 on the power play against the Blues after going 2-for-39 over its previous 13 tilts. Alex Ovechkin, who has three goals and an assist in his past three games, netted his league-leading 33rd tally against St. Louis.

OVERs the story when Caps, Preds collide

The Capitals and Predators have a long history of going OVER totals, as nine of the past 11 meetings between the clubs have gone OVER the closing total with an average combined score of 6.9 goals. The Preds have also gone OVER in four of their last five contests with a day off between games.

Betting trends are pointing to a Capitals bounce-back tonight. Washington has fared well when coming off consecutive losses, as it’s 12-2 SU in its past 14 when dropping its last two games. To top it off, the Caps are 5-1 SU and 6-0 on the puckline in their previous six road games against teams with winning records.

My pick: take the OVER

These teams are no stranger to playing in high-scoring games, and I’m expecting to see more fireworks in this one. Nashville has scored 10 goals in its past three games while cashing the OVER in each of those, as the Preds offense continues to be potent enough to make them an OVER threat every time they take the ice. Washington figures to do its part in that regard to push this one above the total.
