Capitals Aim for Eight Straight Wins in Pittsburgh Tonight

Fresh off snapping Boston’s 19-game point run on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Penguins will face another red-hot team in the Washington Capitals at PPG Paints Arena tonight. The Capitals, who’ve won a season high-tying seven in a row, opened as +115 road underdogs with a total of 6.5.

Standout Stats

  • The past three meetings between the Caps and Pens have resulted in one-goal decisions, with Pittsburgh posting a 2-1-0 SU mark in that span. Sidney Crosby scored and set up a goal in the Penguins’ 2-1 win over Washington on December 19.
  • Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby has turned aside 115 of 123 shots during his five-start winning streak. On the season, Holtby is 26-16-4 with a 2.88 goals-against average and .910 save percentage.
  • Penguins netminder Matt Murray is on an impressive run of his own, allowing two goals or less in five of his last eight contests. Murray is 23-11-3 with a 2.77 GAA and .917 SV% in 2018-19.
  • Crosby and Washington captain Alex Ovechkin have stepped up when facing each other this season, as Crosby has five (two goals, three assists) of his 68 career points against the Capitals this year. Ovechkin has two (both goals) of his 58 vs the Pens in 2018-19.
  • Due to the dominance of Holtby, the Capitals have been a reliable UNDER wager of late. In Washington’s past five games, the UNDER is 4-1 with an average combined score of 4.8 goals. The Penguins have gone UNDER in each of their past four home games with an average combined score of 4.5 goals.
  • Betting the Capitals as puckline underdogs against the Penguins has been a profitable endeavor. Washington is 8-2 on the puckline in its past 10 as puckline dogs vs Pittsburgh. Sportsbook opened the Capitals’ +1.5 number at a price of -225.

My best bet for Capitals-Penguins

UNDER 6.5 goals

With Holtby and Murray expected to get the start tonight, I expect the streaking goalies to take center stage and for this game to go UNDER as a result. Due to the high-octane offenses both teams possess, it makes sense to see oddsmakers open the total at 6.5, but it’s a little high, in my opinion. Take the UNDER.

The total has gone UNDER in four of the Capitals’ last five games (avg. combined score: 4.8).away The Capitals are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games as underdogs vs the Penguins. The total has gone UNDER in the Penguins’ last four games at home (avg. combined score: 4.5).home
