Canada, Sweden Looking To End Gold-Medal Drought At World Juniors

Canada and Sweden will meet in the world junior hockey championship final in Buffalo, New York on Friday.

The world junior championship has been unpredictable over the past several years with no nation claiming back-to-back gold medals since Canada won five in a row from 2005 to 2009. Since then, both Canada and Sweden have found their way to the top of the podium once, Canada in 2015 and Sweden in 2012.

Despite a narrow 4-3 loss to the United States during round-robin play, Canada has posted the best scoring differential in the tournament, outscoring opponents 36-6. Aside from the one defeat, the Canadians have won every game by at least two goals, with four victories by at least five.

However, scoring on Sweden is not going to be an easy task for the high-flying Team Canada. Sweden has only allowed 11 goals through six games in the tournament. Goaltender Filip Gustavsson has been great but also has the luxury of having a stud defensive group in front of him buoyed by projected first overall pick Rasmus Dahlin.
