World Juniors Prop Odds: Group Winners, Top Goal Scorer And Top Point Scorer

This is the best of years for World Juniors fans, who are getting two championship tournaments in the span of six months. To be able to enjoy this best-on-best junior hockey tournament so soon after just going through another one is quite something.

It’s unfortunate that this was due to an absolutely bungled COVID strategy by the IIHF in the winter of 2021-22, but at least we have this, right? For a junior buff like me, two tournaments in the span of six months is the best Christmas gift.

We’ve already set the field for the World Junior Championship favorites. You can see the odds for the 2023 WJC outright Sportsbook here as well as our picks and insights.

Group A Pick: Canada (-335)

It’s hard to imagine anyone usurping Canada at the top of Group A. The Canadians are armed with Connor Bedard, who is scoring at a rate of 2.25 points per game in the Western Hockey League, as well as Shane Wright, the No. 4 pick in this year’s NHL draft who’s got a combined five goals and six points in 13 games in the NHL and AHL.

Canada is also playing this tournament on home ice. In the last 10 World Juniors on Canadian soil, the hosts have won their group eight times.

Group B pick: USA (-110)

Finland is a strong pick to win this group after finishing second in the last tournament. But the Finns don’t have Aatu Raty, the Islanders prospect who put up 10 points in seven games in that tourney. They’ll be giving the first-line role to Brad Lambert, who’s struggled at the AHL level with three points in 14 games.

The U.S. has a strong core of talented players like Luke Hughes, Cutter Gauthier, Jimmy Snuggerud and Logan Cooley. That crew of players is averaging 1.2 points per game in the NCAA. Having that many players perform that well at the NCAA level makes them the easy favorite.

2023 World Juniors Top Goal Scorer Pick

Connor Bedard (+300)

The presumptive first overall selection at the 2023 NHL Draft is having another monster season in the WHL, specifically on the goal front. Bedard has 27 goals in 28 games. In his last five games, he has eight goals. He also had 10 goals in 11 games combined at the world U18 and U20 levels last season.

Shane Wright (+850)

The last time Wright represented Canada at the international level, he scored nine goals in five games with the U18 squad. Now, two years later, Wright will line up with top talent Connor Bedard. In pre-tournament play, Wright already has two goals in one game. Bedard had an assist on both.

To get him at +850 is incredible value.

2023 World Juniors Top Point Scorer Pick

Bedard and Wright are both great picks here at +300 and +600, respectively. But let’s look past the two front-runners to talk about someone else.

Joakim Kemell (+1000)

Kemell finished second in scoring at the last tournament with 12 points in seven games. He returns to the WJC a year more mature and more skilled. He’s going to be a leader for the Finns and will certainly find himself among the scoring leaders again this time around.

Luke Hughes (+1200)

Hughes was a top player for the U.S. at the last tournament with six points in five games. He’s going to be on the top defensive pairing for the Americans and running the power play. With the offensive talent on the U.S. squad, he is going to put up points.
