Canada Looks for 2nd Straight Upset of Germany in Rio Semis

The Germans will get a second shot at Canada Tuesday as they face them in semifinal action at the women’s Olympic soccer tournament. The Canadian ladies escaped their group play match against Germany with a 2-1 victory, overcoming an early 1-0 deficit with the help of a two-goal performance from forward Melissa Tancredi.

  • Canada was a heavy underdog when they beat Germany in group play.
  • Germany has been tagged with a +160 line to take the gold medal in women’s soccer.
  • Germany outshot Canada 20-4 in their last match.

Team Canada has a chance to return to the podium after its surprising bronze medal run in 2012 but is not favored by oddsmakers to win gold. Bovada has given Canada the second-worst odds (+525) behind Sweden to come out on top.

Most would say the Canadians were heavily outplayed by Germany in their last meeting and Hope Solo might even call the Canucks' performance cowardly. They sat back and absorbed the pressure applied by Germany and struck quickly on the counter. I expect them to play similar tactics Tuesday and if they can once again stifle the German attack, they have a good chance to sneak through to the final.

Oddsmakers think little of Canada’s odds in this one and with the unpredictability of women’s soccer, the +240 line being offered by Bovada for Canada to win in regular time makes for an excellent opportunity to expose some value.
