Washington is the Slight Favorite to Win a Wide-Open Pac-12 Tournament

Odds to win Pac 12 tournament

At the conclusion of the regular season, there wasn’t a single Pac-12 team in the AP Top 25 poll in what has been a fiercely close conference schedule. Washington was ranked a couple of weeks ago before it fell 76-73 to California, which marked the Bears’ first Pac-12 win of the season, and the Huskies are the +250 favorite to win the Pac-12 tournament. However, Oregon appears to be peaking at the right time, winning its last four games, and is second on the oddsboard at +300.

Huskies Slumping Toward the end of the season

Washington was the team to beat in the Pac-12 this season, beginning conference play with a 10-0 record and finishing atop the standings with a 15-3 slate and going 24-7 overall. Additionally, during non-conference play, the Huskies narrowly fell 81-79 to then-No. 1 Gonzaga and 73-61 to defensive-minded then-No. 13 Virginia Tech.

As good as Washington has been this year, it was less than stellar down the stretch, going 2-2 in its last four, with its two wins being a 62-61 victory over Stanford and an 81-76 overtime triumph over Oregon State. Its two losses over that span came against lowly California and 55-47 to Oregon. If the Huskies can return to the form they had from late December into mid-February, they are a lock at +250.

Can the Ducks carry momentum into the tournament?

Oregon was dealt a tough blow in mid-December when it lost freshman center and NBA prospect Bol Bol for the remainder of the season with a foot injury. The son of Manute Bol was chipping in 21 points and 9.6 rebounds per game through the first nine contests of the year, in which the Ducks went 6-3 SU. After that injury, Oregon floated around mediocrity for most of the rest of the season but really found its stride down the stretch.

The Ducks have seemed to really find their footing since the beginning of March, matching their season high with a four-game winning streak, including a home 79-51 triumph over Arizona State and a road 55-47 victory over Washington, the Huskies’ lone home loss all season. I think Oregon has the ability to do damage in the tournament, so seeing the Ducks second on the oddsboard at +300 isn’t surprising.

My best bet for the Pac-12 tournament

Oregon +300

Sometimes it’s just about being hot at the right time and that’s what I think Oregon is right now. The Ducks had a four-game winning streak in mid-December – two of those games with Bol Bol and two without – but hadn’t found the same level of success until they closed the year on a tear of the same length. I was impressed with the road win over Washington and topping Arizona State and I think Oregon continues this run into the tournament.
