The team did lose some key pieces in Odell Beckham Jr., Robert Woods, Von Miller, starting cornerback Darious Williams and two starting offensive linemen, but they added Bobby Wagner, Allen Robinson and a few others.

Top to bottom, the Rams roster isn’t quite as good as their championship team, but the champs still have only five teams above them in Super Bowl odds.

Don’t let L.A.’s Week 1 performance against the Bills fool you too much. They are better than they looked and are a value at +1500 (down from +1200) in Super Bowl odds. There were more encouraging signs of them shaking off the Super Bowl hangover with wins over Atlanta and Arizona in Weeks 2 and 3.

Best Super Bowl Long-Shot Bets

Bonus:
100% Up To $150

Review
Play Now

Baltimore Ravens (+1800)

It feels like a lot of people are forgetting how good the Ravens have been in recent years. They always have a good defense and have one of the best 10 or so quarterbacks in the league in former MVP Lamar Jackson.

The Ravens were decimated by injury last season and still managed an 8-9 record, and I think with some health luck they should easily be in the mix in the AFC.

The Ravens and Jackson (who is a legitimate NFL MVP odds candidate) looked good in their Week 1 road win against the Jets and were incredible (at least offensively) in Weeks 2 and 3 despite their loss to Miami in Week 2.

If the Ravens can figure out some of their coverage issues, they have the offense to compete with anyone. We’re losing a bit of value on this bet with each passing week as the Ravens were sitting at +2000 just before Week 1. I still like them at +1800.

Cincinnati Bengals (+3000)

Joe Burrow and the Bengals had a rough Week 1, and arguably an even worse Week 2. Burrow threw four interceptions, took seven sacks and did everything in his power to throw their Week 1 game away and he was running for his life all afternoon against Defensive Player of the Year odds candidate Micah Parsons and the Cowboys defense.

There’s definitely a part of me that wonders whether this team simply ran hot for a few months last year and isn’t the Super Bowl contender they appeared to be. But they turned it around in Week 3 by soundly beating the Jets on the road. Burrow picked apart the Jets D and didn’t throw a pick. He also only took two sacks.

I still believe in the talent on this team and think that if they can find a way to protect Burrow consistently, they should be OK. The offensive line has a lot of new faces, so it could take them a few weeks to jell.

But for now I see the Bengals as a good value at +3000.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+1000)

It isn’t quite a long shot, but these are the best odds we’ve seen on the Bucs in months. There are questions already starting to pop up about Tom Brady’s commitment, his ability and his personal life that have some analysts writing off the GOAT just three weeks into the season despite his team being 2-1.

I’m buying the dip on that negativity based on a look at the situation around Brady right now. He was missing his top three receivers, top two left tackles, top left guard and starting center in Week 3 and still almost tied the game on the last play against a far healthier Green Bay team with Super Bowl aspirations.

The Bucs will be healthier at some point soon and the second half of their schedule is a lot lighter than the first. There are concerns, but this is still one of the best teams in the NFL when at full force.

Visit Our Recommended NFL Sportsbooks

Best Bet: Kansas City Chiefs (+750)

There’s an old cliche in football that you’re never as bad as you look and never as good as you look, so if we’re going to be optimistic about teams like Cincinnati, we have to take the Chiefs’ big win over Arizona in Week 1 with a grain of salt, too.

But it’s a very small grain of salt. This team is good.

There will be hiccups for the Chiefs this season (Week 3 loss to Indy) as they play in probably the best division in football, and there were some legitimate questions about how the Chiefs offense would look without superstar wideout Tyreek Hill. But it seems like the answer should have been clear all along: Patrick Mahomes makes people better.

Great quarterbacks elevate their teammates, and Mahomes did just that with his five touchdown passes in Week 1 and another strong game against the rival Chargers in Week 2. Combined with an elite offensive line, great coach and good-enough defense, there’s no reason this team can’t win it all this year and you’re getting them here at a pretty good price relative to the other top teams.

Bonus:
100% Up To $150

Review
Play Now

When it comes to betting on the NFL, odds are available before teams take their first regular-season snaps. The 29-year-old has won five of her last six bouts, including three by submission victory. Seven of her pro wins have come via submission and five have come via decision.

Yan is looking to end a two-fight losing skid after dropping a decision to Marina Rodriguez at UFC 272 and losing to now-champion Carla Esparza by technical knockout at UFC Vegas 27. “Nine” has seven stoppage wins on her pro record but has never scored a finish since joining the UFC in 2017.

UFC Fight Night: Dern vs Yan Odds

Bodog lists Dern as the -250 favorite and Yan as the +195 underdog. The American has fought well enough in her career to get the nod from most sportsbooks, but it’s worth noting her two UFC losses – to Amanda Ribas and Rodriguez – came while she was favored by -185 and -195, respectively. In fact, Dern has been the favorite in all but one of her UFC bouts (+105 vs Nina Nunes, where Dern won by SUB).

Yan has been favored in six of her eight UFC fights, including her loss to Esparza at UFC Vegas 27. After opening as a +230 ‘dog vs Rodriguez at UFC 272, Yan will fight as a back-to-back underdog for the first time in her career when she takes on Dern.

Looking at the Dern vs Yan odds, our sports betting calculator tells us Dern’s -250 status gives her an implied win probability of 71.43 percent. Yan’s +195 odds represent an implied win probability of 66.10 percent. That means a successful $10 bet on the favorite pays out $14, while the same wager on the underdog pays $29.50.

Dern: Need to Knows

The 29-year-old is of Brazilian descent and has trained in jiu-jitsu since she was a child, eventually earning her a prestigious black belt. With her submission skill set, Dern is as skilled as any female fighter, making her a menace on the mat. She is ferociously creative in the way she sinks kneebars and armbars especially, having secured 58 percent of her pro wins by submission. Yan will be utterly outclassed if this fight hits the canvas.

As is the case when fighting any jiu-jitsu specialist, Yan will need to be cautious about engaging Dern, even if the American is knocked down or laying on her back. It’s an easy trap for a fighter like Yan to hunt a ground-and-pound KO and get overexcited, ultimately walking into a bottom-mount submission such as an inverted triangle. Randa Markos walked into a submission against Dern at UFC Vegas 11 doing that exact thing. Dern isn’t a super skilled striker, so it’s tempting to engage at all times, but watch for her to lay plenty of traps from bottom position.

Dern’s last three fights were against Tecia Torres (win – split decision), Rodriguez (loss – unanimous decision) and Nunes (win – submission).

Yan: Need to Knows

Yan made her come-up in the UFC as an aggressive striker who loves forward pressure. The Chinese fighter has a strong chin, often getting in tight for dirty boxing exchanges. She’s so aggressive that she’ll often be happy taking damage in close since she knows she’ll be close enough to fire back. At distance, Yan is also very dangerous. She has no problem selling out for hook kicks or spinning backfists to put on a show.

Dern’s last loss to Rodriguez offered a good blueprint for how to beat the BJJ expert. Rodriguez barely survived some suffocating spots on the mat, but was much better on the feet. Rodriguez kept Dern at distance with leg kicks and front kicks. When things got in tight, she went to her Muay Thai toolbox. That’s how Yan can win. The improvement in fight IQ was a welcome step in Brown’s progression, as the 32-year-old has now won three fights in a row. He looks more mature in the Octagon, fighting smarter instead of fighting harder. The latter strategy saw him end up on the receiving end of some tough KOs earlier in his career.

While Brown is powerful and can put guys out, we see this bout as a point fight waiting to happen. With a 4-0 record and scoring at least 33 points per contest, this could be the week they do it.

Penn State hasn't gotten too much credit and that's what happens when you share the same conference as the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes and No. 4 Michigan Wolverines -- but, a few more wins could turn some heads.

Senior QB Sean Clifford is looking to have the most successful season of his career, with 890 passing yards and eight touchdowns. He's built some chemistry with new faces on the team, preparing to pass on the torch. One of those faces is RB Kaytron Allen.

Allen has improved from his newbie freshman status to looking like a reliable performer, earning three touchdowns in his last two performances. Last week, his stats took a leap when he rushed for 111 yards on 13 attempts.

Penn State hasn't seen the Northwestern Wildcats (1-3) since 2017. But, the Nittany Lions have the numbers being 7-3 overall in the last 10 meetings. Penn State knows breaking into the top 10 turns you into a threat, they won't want to drop this easier win and I think it'll be a group effort.

According to our Odds Calculator, a $100 bet would pay out $148.78, which is a $48.78 profit.

The Pick: Kaytron Allen Anytime Touchdown Scorer (ODDS -115)

Bonus:
50% Up To $1000

Review
Play Now

Prop #2: NC State vs Clemson – Will Shipley Touchdown (-205)

The Game: October 1, 7:30 p.m. ET
The Prop: Will Will Shipley Score A Touchdown?

On the other side of things is the NC State Wolfpack (4-0), who will desperately try to hold onto the number 10 spot as they kick off against the stiff competition in the rebounding Clemson Tigers (4-0).

The Tigers disappointed in 2021, missing the CFP for the first time in six years. In their 10-3 overall record last season, one of those losses was courtesy of the Wolfpack -- who took the September match 27-21.

But, determined Clemson has been successful so far in redeeming itself. Being 8-2 against the last 10 annual meetings against NC State, I think they'll want to sort out last year's loss too.

RB Will Shipley has been a leader on the field. The sophomore has earned seven touchdowns, tying him for third-most with fellow rushers in the nation. I expect QB DJ Uiagalelei to continue looking for Shipley as they compete against the highest-ranked opponent yet.

According to our consensus data, Clemson has a 54 percent likelihood to cover the -7 spread.

The Pick: Will Shipley Anytime Touchdown Scorer (ODDS -205)

Prop #3: Iowa State vs Kansas – Jalon Daniels Touchdown (-143)

The Game: October 1, 3:30 p.m. ET
The Prop: Will Jalon Daniels Score A Touchdown?

There's a battle in the Big 12 as the Iowa State Cyclones (3-1) visit the Kansas Jayhawks (4-0), who currently top the conference standings.

Though the Cyclones are a dominant 9-1 in its last 10 contests with the Jayhawks, I'm expecting Kansas to put an end to Iowa State's seven-game win streak against them.

It's the first time since 2009 that the Jayhawks have opened the season undefeated after the first four weeks and QB Jalon Daniels plays a large role in it.

After last week's 35-27 win over the Duke Blue Devils, the junior leaped into head coach Lance Leipold's arms, shrieking with excitement about the program's new era.

Daniels currently ranks first in the nation with a 98.0 QBR, and aside from passing stats, he also leads his team with 320 rushing yards. He has pocketed 11 touchdowns, including four in Week 4's victory.

To me, this is a prime opportunity for the quarterback to showcase just how improved this new era is. Daniels is a leader, so I expect it to show on the field this week.

According to our Odds Calculator, wagering $100 on the bet will result in a payout of $169.93, which would represent a $69.93 profit for your pocket.

The Pick: Jalon Daniels Anytime Touchdown Scorer (ODDS -143)

What Is An NCAAF Prop Bet?

A college football prop bet is a wager that has no direct impact on the outcome of a football game.

A prop bet can be referred to as a “proposition” wager, and though these bets are often for entertainment purposes, they also give opportunity to home in on specific statistics or trends to profit off tiny bits of information.

NCAAF prop bets can range from player props, game trends or even more niche bets like the result of the coin toss or length of the national anthem.

At your online betting site of choice, NCAAF prop bets could be something like:

• Will either team score 3 unanswered times in the game?

• Will the first turnover be a fumble? Went down to a dealer’s school yesterday to do a little research, and found out that the casinos now have my favorite card game from childhood, WAR! Yea, that war. You remember. Sit down and each player gets half the deck, then you start turning over cards. When you match, it’s WAR BAABBBEEE! Then you bury three cards, turn up the fourth, and whoever is higher wins. CLASSIC! Well, it’s kinda the same deal at the casino. With a few tweaks. If your card is higher than the dealer, obviously, you win. If the dealer is higher, they win. But when you match, there are two options. The player can surrender, in which case you lose half the bet. Or, you can go to WAR, but you have to double your bet. If you wanna go to war, there are rules. The dealer burns three cards before dealing out another to the player and themselves. If your card is higher than the dealer, you win, but only the original amount of your wager. If the dealer is higher, you lose it all. If it’s a tie, than you win it all. And when you sit down on your couch, lemme tell you there is a sweet little side bet where you can wager on a tie at 10/1 odds. As the great Edwin Starr sang, ‘War, What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.’ LOVE Edwin, but have to disagree. Casino War is absolutely worth going to battle!

WINNERS ONLY!!!

First up a little afternoon baseball for you. As long as he doesn’t cut his hair, we’re gonna roll with Adrian Sampson and the Cubs over the Reds. Sampson has been quite a find for the Cubbies and one of the reasons that they’ve won eight of the last nine. In particular, Sampson’s last four starts have been close to perfection. He threw 24 innings and allowed only three earned runs for a svelte 1.13 ERA. We love the way Chicago is closing the season, but can’t say the same about Cincy. The Reds have dropped six of their last seven, and 16 of the last 20. Heard a rumor that their golf clubs are already in the clubhouse. Cash is down hard on the Cubbies. We were gonna take an extended look at the Blue Jays with Alek Manoah tonight, but when the Orioles lost yesterday, the Jays clinched a Wild Card spot. Since they might start to rest some players, we’ll take a pass.

Looking to keep the winning streak going, stepping into the college football world and will roll with Kansas +3.5 points over Iowa State. When you look at the Kansas record, 4-0 straight up and against the spread, you might think, like Dorothy in the ‘Wizard of Oz,’ “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” If you had Kansas at FOUR & OH before the season started, bravo. I did not. However, the new regime led by Lance Leipold, has started to rock. Who is this guy Leipold? I’ll tell ya. He was the head coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater from 2007 to 2014, and posted a SICK 109-6 record. That’s ONE HUNDRED NINE & SIX in case you didn’t hear me. He won FIVE Division III National Championships and turned around a lousy Buffalo program before leaving for Lawrence. Sure he was only 2-10 last season, but he inherited, as we say around my house, BUPKIS! Which means nothing, or, something totally worthless. But the new Kansas kids have scored 194 points in four games. You know who else has that many? Only Michigan (200), Ohio State (195), Tennessee (194) and Alabama (193) live in that neighborhood. Rock Chalk, Jayhawk baabbbeee!!!

Benjamin Eckstein is a nationally syndicated sportswriter/oddsmaker. But, I think this Cougars schedule has been a lot harder than we think. Their only losses, to Texas Tech and Kansas, have come against two of the most surprising teams this college football season, with the Jayhawks cracking the Top 25 and Texas Tech shocking Texas last week.

This week against Tulane is a great opportunity for the Cougars to get back on track and prove they’re better than their record. Aside from shocking Kansas State in Week 3, the Green Wave haven’t showed much this year. They’re trending in the wrong direction and Houston will take advantage at home. Houston is 8-1 in its last nine games when playing at home against Tulane.

Week 5 Parlay Pick #2: UTSA -4.0 vs Middle Tennessee

This has letdown game written all over it, so we’re going to bet on the right side of that letdown. Middle Tennessee embarrassed Miami last week, beating the Hurricanes 45-31, but it wasn’t in a sustainable way.

The Blue Raiders got 408 yards through the air on just 16 completions, blowing up for big play after big play all game. The Middle Tennessee win was more reliant on Miami mistakes than anything the Blue Raiders were doing, and UTSA can contain those big plays for a big win this weekend.

Week 5 Parlay Pick #3: UTEP -3.0 vs Charlotte

UTEP flashed a refined game plan last week against Boise State. Taking the ball out of QB Gavin Hardison’s hands allowed the Miners to be more efficient both running and passing. Hardison was 10-for-11 passing and three different UTEP rushers had 40-plus yards on the ground.

If they can bring that same attack against a Charlotte team that’s allowed 40-plus points in every game this year, the Miners should put up enough points to run away with this one.

Lock in your college football parlays with these odds over at Bovada!

Bonus:
100% Up To $150

Review
Play Now

Find full odds at Bovada

What Is A College Football Parlay?

A college football parlay, or any betting parlay, is a combination of multiple bets. After beating up on the early cupcakes, this will be the first tough task for UCLA.

Washington, on the other hand, has a more respectable 4-0 start, with wins over Stanford, Michigan State and Kent State. Michael Penix looks like the real deal at QB, and he’ll be too much for UCLA to handle.

College Football Expert Pick #3: Navy/Air Force OVER 37.5

The Game: Navy vs Air Force - Oct. 1

People love to take the service academy UNDERs, but not when Air Force is involved. The Falcons have scored 40 points by themselves in three of their four games this season, so a total line sitting at 37.5 just doesn’t make sense.

Navy presents a solid defensive challenge but Air Force’s passing game has taken off this season, and they’ll do more than their part to get to this OVER.

How To Place The Best College Football Bets

At any of our top NCAA Football betting sites, you will find college football odds that look like the following:

Penn State: +5.5
Wisconsin: -5.5
OVER/UNDER: 58.5

The odds listed above are lines for the spread and total for a fictional Penn State/Wisconsin game. The plus (+) and minus (-) lines represent the spread, a line set by the books that a team must “cover” in order to win. In this circumstance, the minus (-) favorites, Wisconsin, must win by more than 5.5 points to win a bet. Penn State, the plus underdogs, can lose by five points or less.

The OVER/UNDER is as simple as it sounds. In this example, you choose if there will be OVER or UNDER 58.5 total points scored in the Badgers-Nittany Lions game.

Use our college football expert picks to help you choose your pick for a few NCAAF games every weekend, and use our resources below to help enhance your college football betting skills.

More College Football Expert Picks And Betting Resources:

College football picks

College football futures

College football scores

Betting trends

Power rankings

College football consensus picks

National championship prop bets

Thu, 29 Sep 2022 22:35:16 -0400 College Football Expert Picks: Week 5 Locks 1530509 College Football Upset Picks: Best Week 5 Underdogs https://www.oddsshark.com/2133440
Betting on favorites all day isn’t that much fun. While this is where we keep our top upset picks, we also compile a college football underdog betting report with all the top upset trends to know.

Underdog Pick #1: Kansas (+135) vs Iowa State

Hop on the Kansas bandwagon and let’s make some Jayhawks money. After years of being a college football laughingstock, Kansas is now 4-0 and sits atop the Big 12. With wins over West Virginia and Houston, Kansas isn’t just racking up easy victories either. The Jayhawks’ resume ranks sixth in all of college football, per ESPN’s Power Index, up with the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, USC and Tennessee.

But still, despite all that, they aren’t favored this week against a middling Iowa State squad. If they keep giving us plus money to bet on Kansas, we’re going to keep taking it until they lose.

Underdog Pick #2: NC State (+215) vs Clemson

We picked an upset against Clemson last week and nearly got it. Wake Forest had chances late in the game and in OT to snatch the underdog victory but couldn’t get it done. So, for the same reasons we bet on the Demon Deacons last week, we like NC State in Week 5.

Wolfpack QB Devin Leary has passed for four touchdowns in two of his last three games, and that offensive capability could be a problem for a beat-up Clemson secondary. Clemson’s top cornerback and strong safety were out last week against Wake, and the Deacons lit up the backup DBs for some huge plays in the air. If NC State can take advantage of some similar holes, they’ll have upset potential against the Tigers this week.

Lock in your college football underdog bets with these odds over at Bovada!

Bonus:
100% Up To $150

Review
Play Now

The College Football Upset Parlay

If you parlay $100 on Kansas (+135) and NC State (+215) in Week 5, you would profit $640.25 for a total payout of $740.25. Not bad for a college football upset parlay.

You can calculate your own parlay odds and picks at our Parlay Calculator.

This Year’s Biggest College Football Upsets

Already this year there have been some massive college football upsets. Here are the three biggest underdogs to win outright so far in 2022:

Georgia Southern (+1400) over Nebraska

Marshall (+1100) over Notre Dame

Eastern Michigan (+800) over Arizona State

What Is A College Football Upset Pick?

A college football upset pick or a college football underdog pick is a wager on an NCAA football squad that is not expected to win, according to the odds. This means that the team is “plus money” or you’ll get a bigger payout if they do actually win, instead of a classic favorite.

At your online betting site of choice, you could bet on any number of college football underdogs. I like them at home here against a Browns team that will be without Myles Garrett while still starting Jacoby Brissett at quarterback.

I also like the Ravens at home against the banged-up Bills. Buffalo has a staggering injury list and is coming off a game where the offense ran 90 plays in scorching heat. They’re staying on the road here against a good Ravens team. I think Baltimore keeps it close and maybe even wins outright.

Lastly, it’s hard to fathom why the defending champs are underdogs against the 49ers after what we saw from the Niners in Week 3. Now missing star left tackle Trent Williams, I don’t think the Niners will score much and I believe the Rams are just the better team. Recent history be damned.

Bonus:
100% Up To $150

Review
Play Now

Find full odds at Bodog

Week 4 NFL Parlay #2 - Birds Of A Feather Win Together

Week 4 Parlay Picks

Team and Line

Odds

Cleveland Browns vs Atlanta Falcons +1

-110

Buffalo Bills vs Baltimore Ravens +3

-110

Jacksonville Jaguars vs Philadelphia Eagles ML

-280

Arizona Cardinals +1 vs Carolina Panthers

-105

TOTAL:

+866

Hopefully this parlay will have you quacking some champagne on Sunday evening.

With apologies to the Seahawks, I can’t stop raven about the bird teams this week.

I already mentioned why I like the Falcons, and I think we’re robin the sportsbooks by getting them +1 at home.

And getting the Ravens at +3, considering the injuries on Buffalo, should be ill eagle.

Philly at home against the Jaguars is probably the safest bet in this Week 4 NFL parlay. I’m just hoping the Jags don’t leave a fowl taste in our mouths come Monday after how well they’ve played this season.

And lastly, I think the Cardinals are better than the Panthers, so getting them at plus money is eggciting. I just hope their defensive woes don’t come home to roost this week. As PFF’s No. 32 defense, it could get a little hawkward if the lowly Panthers offense puts up a bunch of points.

There are a couple long shots here, but if they hit, we’re looking at poultry in motion, folks.

Bonus:
100% Up To $150

Review
Play Now

Find full odds at Bodog

Week 4 NFL Parlay #3 - Team Nepotism!

Week 4 Parlay Picks

Team and Line

Odds

Los Angeles Rams vs San Francisco 49ers ML

-120

New England Patriots +9.5 vs Green Bay Packers

-110

Denver Broncos +2.5 vs Las Vegas Raiders

-110

Cleveland Browns vs Atlanta Falcons +1

-105

TOTAL:

+1205

Nothing says NFL football like some old-fashioned American nepotism. Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett is the son of former NFL coach Paul Hackett, who somehow never taught his son how to manage a game properly, when to call a timeout or whether attempting one of the longest field goals in NFL history is a better idea than going for a fourth-and-five.

Either way, I’m taking little Hackett against the Raiders and head coach Josh McDaniels, who is, you guessed it, the son of a coach! McDaniels’ dad Thom is described as a “legend” of Ohio high school football, but he didn’t even make it to the NFL. Advantage Hackett fam.

Lastly, I like the Falcons again here at +1 over the Browns. Did you know Falcons coach Arthur Smith is the son of the FedEx founder and CEO??

OK, he’s not the son of a coach, but this is a guy who could be sipping Mai Tais on a Mediterranean yacht while watching his brutal team on the biggest screen in Malta! If you have four different NFL parlay picks, you could bet those individually for lesser individual outcomes, or you could parlay them together for better odds. The trick to a parlay is once you combine your bets, you need every bet to hit for the parlay payout.

At your online betting site of choice, you could parlay any number of games. The more games or events you parlay together, the higher total odds will be. Finding a parlay that works for you is a bit of a risk/reward tradeoff. Like with any bet, the higher odds (or more parlay legs) you bet, the higher the payout but the lower chance of hitting.

Check out Odds Shark’s Parlay Calculator to find the parlay odds for any combination of games, bets or events. They have PFF’s 32nd-ranked defense and 17th-ranked offense and are an overtime fumble return TD from possibly being 0-3 to start the year.

But I don’t think the Panthers are much better. And I don’t think Baker Mayfield is better than Kyler Murray.

Cards coach Kliff Kingsbury is also 14-3-2 against the spread as a road underdog since joining the team, and Panthers coach Matt Rhule is 1-7 ATS as a home favorite.

In a slate full of extremely tight lines, I’m holding my nose and clicking on this one.

The Pick: Cardinals +1.5 (-110)

Bonus:
100% Up To $150

Review
Play Now

Buffalo Bills vs Baltimore Ravens UNDER 53

An UNDER in a game with two NFL MVP candidates at quarterback??

I could very well be crazy but I think this line is too high. The Bills have sustained a ton of injuries to key players across their roster, and I don’t think we have seen the Ravens play the way they really want to yet this season.

Baltimore is a run-first team by nature and I think there’s a good chance that with running back J.K. Dobbins now back from injury, they run it a ton – and successfully – against the battered Bills.

Buffalo’s staggering injury list leaves them vulnerable to the run and less likely to put up huge points offensively.

I don’t see a 13-10 type of game, but 53 points is a line that assumes these teams are at full strength, which they aren’t. This line is already moving down at some books.

The Pick: UNDER 53 (-110)

Bonus:
100% Up To $150

Review
Play Now

New England Patriots vs Green Bay Packers (-9.5)

The Patriots will likely be starting veteran journeyman quarterback Brian Hoyer for this game, a situation I don’t see being too pretty for the visiting team.

The Packers have one of the better defenses in the league, are at home and their passing game seems to be rounding into form a bit.

Aaron Rodgers and company moved the ball easily at times against an elite Buccaneers secondary in Week 3, and though the Bucs ended up slowing Rodgers later in the game, I don’t see the Pats having that same kind of success.

9.5 points is a lot to cover in an NFL game, but I’m confident the Pats won’t score much, so Green Bay might only need to put up around 20 points to cover. I don’t think I would bet this line at 10 or more, however.

The Pick: Packers -9.5 (-110)

Bonus:
100% Up To $150

Review
Play Now

Los Angeles Rams (+2) vs San Francisco 49ers

This line is already moving down and a lot of books have this set to Rams +1, but if you can find a line at +2, I like the Rams here as road dogs.

I’m a little afraid of Kyle Shanahan’s recent dominance over Sean McVay and the Rams (the Niners have won six of the last seven meetings), but I see the Rams as the better team with the better quarterback getting points.

The Niners offense looked broken against the Broncos in Week 3 and now they’ve lost star left tackle Trent Williams to injury.

It wouldn’t exactly be surprising if the 49ers won this game, but I think the Rams, PFF’s third-ranked team, are a good bet as underdogs.

The Pick: Rams +2 (-110)

Bonus:
100% Up To $150

Review
Play Now

Kansas City Chiefs vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers UNDER 45.5

There’s a good chance this game gets moved to a neutral site (reportedly to Minneapolis at the Vikings’ stadium) with hurricane Ian currently barreling into parts of Florida.

But whether this game is played in Tampa or Minnesota, I like the UNDER here with two struggling offenses and strong defenses.

The Bucs offense is getting star receiver Mike Evans back from suspension this week but will likely still be without Chris Godwin, Julio Jones and a host of starting offensive linemen.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs are a fluky defensive touchdown from being 1-2 and are coming off a terrible performance against what looks like a pretty bad Colts team.

Two struggling offenses and two good defenses makes for a low-scoring game in most instances.

The Pick: UNDER 45.5 (-110)

Add Another NFL Sportsbook Today

Looking For More Free NFL Picks?

See what Odds Shark’s Super Computer is choosing for every side and total to help you make NFL football picks and place your best bets.

Get Free NFL Picks

Thu, 29 Sep 2022 16:30:00 -0400 NFL Expert Picks: Rams, Packers Good Bets In Week 4 1531166 NHL Betting Guide: Is xGF% Good For Handicapping? https://www.oddsshark.com/2146778
The NHL season is almost upon us. Hey, you might have even gone as far as looking at who’s in the net for both teams.

Great. But maybe you're still not clear as to who to wager on. Are there other tools that might help and how helpful might be those tools?

You've probably been told to use advanced analytics to help you handicap your NHL picks. Corsi was the stat-du-jour for a while. Corsi measures shots on goals, shots that missed the net, and shots that were blocked. The idea is that if a team had the puck on its stick for a shot that team was, clearly, in possession of the puck, and puck possession is what mattered most.

But Corsi has been replaced as the advanced stat to use when handicapping. Expected goals-for (xGF%) is what bettors look at now. Expected goals are seen as more accurate in predicting future success because it doesn’t simply look at the number of shots (like Corsi), but the quality of those shots. Where shots are taken matters, the closer to the slot and the net the better. Quality matters more than quantity.

Place Your NHL Bets Here

NHL Handicapping: Does xGF% lead to profits?

As bettors, we're worried about profitability. Is xGF% a key to unlocking more profits when betting on the NHL?

Note that when I’m talking about xGF% I’m talking about xGF% in 5on5 situations and not all situations. So that doesn't count the power play or when on the penalty kill.

When looking at things broadly there's a strong correlation between winning and xGF%. Teams that ranked high in the NHL standings also ranked high when it comes to xGF%. The correlation rate is 0.77. For all you non-math heads out there, that’s what we call a “strong relationship”.

That is of course a little diluted when looking at the top five teams in terms of profitability and cross-referencing their xGF% rank. Here are the top five teams for profits and their xGF% rank in the NHL:

NHL Profitability and xGF% Correlation

Team

Profitability

xGF% Rank

Minnesota Wild

$1,432.16

6

Florida Panthers

$1,181.99

2

New York Rangers

$1,176.07

24

Carolina Hurricanes

$657.00

4

St. Louis Blues

$449.37

23

So while Minnesota, Florida and even Carolina were quite profitable in 21-22 and even ranked high for xGF% so did the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues, two teams that were near the bottom of the NHL’s xGF% table.

But when zooming in and looking at profitability, the correlation between solid xGF% numbers (above 50%) and profits is admittedly weak. A correlation factor of 0.16. You could say there's no relationship at all between the two.

So is xGF% in and of itself a good tool when it comes to handicapping individual NHL games? On its own, it is not. But when used more generally, as in factoring what team is better it is a useful tool.

So as you go about making your NHL bets keep xGF% in mind.

You can find xGF% from most of the advanced NHL stat providers, but my favorite place to go is NaturalStatTrick.com.
Thu, 29 Sep 2022 15:46:32 -0400 NHL Betting Guide: Is xGF% Good For Handicapping? 2146778
