The NFL's regular season is on the horizon, and the hunt for the playoffs will soon be underway.

According to updated NFL playoff odds, there will be plenty of chaos in the league this year as no team has playoff odds better than -800.

Below, I'll break down those 2023 NFL playoff odds and some good bets to make (and miss) the postseason:

Best Bet To Make Playoffs: New York Giants +145

Alright, I'll admit it: I'm a Daniel Jones believer.

Jones may not be a passing god, throwing for just 3205 yards and 15 touchdowns through the air last year. But, he was the perfect mobile game manager for this NY Giants squad. Danny Dimes was the best in the entire NFL with a 1.1% interception rate and added 708 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. He's basically budget Josh Allen without the turnover risk.

Pairing that quarterback play with elite RB Saquon Barkley and solid defense is a great recipe for making the playoffs. It led the Giants to a 9-7-1 record and a postseason spot last year, and I expect the same in 2023.

Bet Vikings To Return To Postseason

Another NFC team I'm expecting to get back to the playoffs is the Minnesota Vikings.

I understand that the Vikings were pretty fraudulent in 2022, somehow winning 13 games with a -3 point differential. But, any luck regression should be offset by some smart offseason additions.

Last year, Kirk Cousins and Dalvin Cook led Minnesota to the league's eighth-best points per game (24.9) while the defense was the team's clear weakness. But, with new defensive coordinator Brian Flores in charge, the Vikings added corner Byron Murphy, DE Marcus Davenport, and DL Dean Lowry.

The Vikings may not win 13 games again in 2023, but the defensive adds should allow them to get back to the postseason, at the very least.

Best Bet To Miss Playoffs: Lions +140

I like what the Lions are doing, I really do. But, I'm not sure 2023 is their year.

Jared Goff needs weapons around him to flourish and the Lions are reliant on rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs and young receiver Jameson Williams, who will miss the start of the season with a suspension. On the other side of the ball, I'm not sure the Lions have enough on defense to cause chaos for opposing quarterbacks. Aidan Hutchison and Jack Campbell may be the core of a great defense, but they need other playmakers around them.

There's something good brewing in Detroit, but they're still short of the NFC's serious contenders. At +140 odds to miss the playoffs, they're the perfect team to fade.

Even Aaron Rodgers Can't Lift Jets To Playoffs

The other team in East Rutherford? I'm not as sold on the Jets.

I get the hype. The NY Jets had the league's second-best defense last season and have some elite weapons on offense like Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson. All they needed was a QB, right? So with Aaron Rodgers, everything will go great, right?

Wrong. Sorry Jets fans. There are two main issues here:

1) I'm not sure Rodgers is the answer. If he performs anything similar to last year, the Jets will be in trouble. The veteran QB threw 12 interceptions with the Packers last year, passing for the lowest yards-per-completion and fewest yards-per-game of his career. His QBR was actually lower than former Jets' QB Mike White last year.

2) Most importantly, these are the New York Jets we're talking about. They will find a way to mess this up, those boys in green always do.

What Are NFL Playoff Prop Bets?

Props are bets made on the occurrence or non-occurrence of certain events. These may not necessarily correlate to the outcome of a particular game. Instead of betting on a team to cover the spread or win outright, you would wager on whether they’re going to make the playoffs or not.

Over the last five seasons, the reigning Super Bowl Champs have been pretty effective in Week 1, posting a 4-1 record. They've also been largely solid in the win department, except for the 2021 champion LA Rams.

Where the reigning Champions falter, is covering the spread. Since 2017, the defending champs have managed to cover ATS in just 43.9% of contests.

It almost seems like teams that lose the Super Bowl are even better than the ones that win the following season. That kind of makes sense, right? More motivation, no offseason partying.

The reigning Super Bowl losers won 62% of games the next year and covered the spread at a 58% clip, too. If you're looking for a team to tail in 2023, maybe it's the Eagles?

Super Bowl Winning QBs Start Strong

Even after an offseason of parades, boat parties, special events, and probably a few cocktails, the reigning Super Bowl champion quarterbacks don't start sluggish the following year.

Matthew Stafford started his 2022 season with a dud last year, tossing three interceptions in a Rams loss, but he's the exception to the rule. Over the last four years (including Stafford's loss), the reigning champion QBs have averaged a 69% completion rate, 293 yards, and 2.75 passing touchdowns in their Week 1 game the following year.

The king of the hot start is Tom Brady. After his two most recent titles in 2018 and 2020, the now (allegedly) retired QB pass for 7 touchdowns and 720 yards in Week 1 the following seasons. Maybe the TB12 diet does work?

Collaros, Getting Older & Getting Better Ahead of 2023

Collaros, the reigning Most Outstanding Player, knows this league like the back of his hand. The 34-year-old is dusting off the helmet to prepare for his 11th season in the CFL. Expect to hear a lot of him in our weekly picks.

Despite a one-point defeat in last year's championship, the Cincinnati product is one of those guys who just knows how to get it done and somehow things fall into place for him.

Last year, all odds were stacked against him winning his second consecutive MOP. B.C. Lions' Nathan Rourke, now in the NFL, was record-setting good with -1200 odds. But, the youngster was injured halfway through the season and Collaros collected the hardware.

He earned it though, with a career-high 4,183 passing yards and 37 touchdowns, 12 TD's more than his previous best. Collaros ages like fine wine, athletically, I mean. He's earned two of his three championship rings in the last four seasons.

With Rourke and McLeod Bethel-Thompson, his tossing competition, moving onto different leagues, it's no wonder Collaros is favored. He should start paying rent at the top of the oddsboard.

Value Pick: Bo Levi mitchell to earn his stripes with ticats

Before Collaros tuned up his skill, Mitchell was the talk of the CFL. The 33-year-old won the honor back in 2018 and struggled to reach that peak after a string of injuries in the last two seasons.

His 2,010 yards and nine touchdowns last season is enough to make you wince. Those were the worst recorded numbers since his rookie season.

But, after being traded from Calgary to Hamilton, the Texas native is ready for another chapter. He seemed to slide into his new colors just fine in Hamilton's 27-22 preseason win over Toronto. Though seeing him in anything other than a Stamps jersey feels wrong. Regardless, don't count a healthy Mitchell out at +500.

Houston vs pittsburgh: Gamblers -3

We're at the point of the season where we can start to see who are contenders and who aren't. The Gamblers (4-3) are and the Maulers (2-5) aren't -- simple.

Houston dropped its four-game streak to Memphis in a close 23-20 finish. We all know the South is tight, a three-way tie at the bottom and one win separating them from the leading Stallions.

Kenji Bahar looked brutal in Week 7, completing just 46 percent of his tosses and two interceptions. I'll cut him some slack, though. We all have off days.

Chalk this game up to this: the Gamblers are trying to keep their playoff hopes intact and doing so against the worst in the league should be easy.

Philadelphia Vs Birmingham: OVER 46

The last time these two met was in last season's championship game. This will be a high-intensity rematch as the Stallions clutch to the top spot in the league with the Stars on their heels, as they hope to clinch a playoff spot.

Birmingham averages the second-most 2,200 yards per game. But, the group also allows opponents the second-most 18.7 PPG.

Expect a showdown between Birmingham's Alex McGough and Philly's Case Cookus. Cookus goes the distance, averaging 217 YPG, but can be messy with his eight interceptions. Meanwhile, McGough is tight and precise with his league-leading 13 touchdowns and 68% passing completion.

Honestly, I see this game tipping in either direction. But, I also see an offensive showcase so I'm playing it safe and taking the OVER.

Memphis vs new Jersey: Showboats +2

Poor Memphis, a four-game hot streak and it's still pinned as an underdog. It's been an uphill battle. but the Showboats keep climbing.

Leading with nine interceptions and 20 sacks, Memphis' defensive core gets the bragging rights. So, we'll see how the Generals passing game looks under pressure.

But even without pressure, it doesn't look good. New Jersey has been bouncing between De'Andre Johnson and Kyle Lauletta, throwing 201 yards last week combined.

I'm banking on the Showboats defense to steal the show again. Let's stop doubting this group.

Michigan vs New Orleans: Panthers +3.5

What happened to the New Orleans Breakers? The squad that was breezing through competition at the beginning of the season, pocketing 105 points in the opening three weeks, has fallen off the wagon.

The Breakers (4-3) are now on a three-game skid. Now, they face the Panthers who just snapped their own four-game losing streak. Both teams are grasping for a postseason position.

Don't get me wrong, New Orleans is supposed to be the more talented group.

I believed at the start of the NHL season that the Carolina Hurricanes were, on paper, the best bet to win the Metropolitan Division. And I was right.

Carolina took the Metropolitan Division with a 113-point season. It's the second time in two seasons that the Canes have won the Metro.

Two years in a row now Rod Brind'Amour has guided his side to the top of the Metropolitan Division. With a 52-21-9 record and 113 points, the Canes edged out the Devils and their 112-point season.

Carolina was the easy favorite to win the division with +195 odds as of October 7.

Their domination in the Metro wasn't just in the standings. It was on the ice as well. Carolina held a 19-6-1 against the other seven Metro teams. Particularly against those two Pennsylvania (Flyers and Penguins) teams with a clean 8-0-0 record.

We don't have the odds for next season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Carolina at the top of the oddsboard for 23-24. And with no expected losses on the roster, I'd bet the Hurricanes do it for a third year.

With back-to-back banners, the Hurricanes seem to be starting their own dynasty in the Metropolitan Division.

I like to look back over the year and see where we were all wrong. What team was given no chance and surprised?

New Jersey Devils (+1200)

The Devils were always going to get better than they were in 2021-22 when they finished seventh in the eight-team Metropolitan Division. But to nearly double the number of points on the board from 63 to 112? Wildly impressive.

And they almost took the division. A single positive result would have netted them a banner. Going 2-2-0 against the Hurricanes was their downfall when it comes to winning the Division.

This is a young team trending up. Look for their 23-24 odds to be much better than in 22-23.

The wins keep on coming. After going 3-0 two weeks ago I went 2-1 last week. My overall record on the NHL season (and Stanley Cup playoffs) improves to 47W-45L-1P. I've also generated 2 units of profit since December. We're making money!

Here’s a quick summary of the three bets I made on Thursday, May 24, and the results:

Hurricanes ML (-105): How bad does Jordan Staal feel by taking a tripping call with less than a minute in a tied elimination game? With Tkachuk scoring the winner that's a big "L" for him and for me

Gudas O1.5 Blocks (-160): Gudas had 7.00 blocked shots per 60 in the series before Game 4. He needed at least two blocks for the prop to hit. He stood in front of exactly two shots. Winner-winner, chicken-dinner.

Duclair O1.5 Shots (-105): Anthony Duclair averaged 3.67 shots on net before Game 4, the line should have been higher than 1.5. I capitalized on that for a nice dub.

The total has gone under eight times in Florida's last nine games. Sergei Bobrovsky has played a bit part in that. The Panthers goalie has been rock solid in these playoffs with a 2.21 GAA and 0.935 SV%. That's why he's the favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy

And while Vegas scores quite a bit at home with an average of 3.33 goals in the playoffs, they haven't faced a goalie quite as good as Bobrovsky in the postseason. This game goes under 5.5 goals with Bob patrolling the Florida crease.

On home ice in these playoffs, Mark Stone leads all Vegas Golden Knights players in terms of production with 13 points in nine games. Or 1.4 points per game at the T-Mobile Arena. He also leads the team in goals at home with six goals. When Vegas scores, Stone is usually in the middle of it.

And look, Vegas is going to score at home. The Golden Knights have averaged 3.33 goals per game on home ice. Stone will get on the end of at least one goal.

NHL Expert Pick #3: Verhaeghe Any Time Goal (+160)

Carter Verhaeghe has been a heck of an addition for the Panthers. The former Toronto Maple Leafs prospect and third-round draft pick from 2013 has 14 goals in 32 playoff games during his Panthers career.

In these playoffs, Verhaeghe leads Florida in goals on the road with five in nine games. He's been a spark plug for Florida all postseason, and he'll continue to be in Game 1 of the Finals.
