Argentina Travels to Uruguay for Must-Win WCQ Match

It’s no secret that the Argentines have struggled in their bid to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. This match against Uruguay, though, offers the white and sky-blue an opportunity for a fresh start with Jorge Sampaoli set to take the reins in his competitive coaching debut for the national team.

  • There hasn’t been a draw in this series in 12 matches.
  • Argentina and Uruguay are 3rd and 17th respectively in the FIFA rankings.
  • Argentina hasn’t conceded a goal since head coach Edgardo Bauza was fired.

Former Argentina head coach Edgardo Bauza was unceremoniously shown the door after a two-to-nil defeat at the hands of Bolivia back in March. Since taking the job left vacant by Bauza, Sampaoli has coached his team to two victories in friendly matchups, including a clean sheet win against Brazil in June.

With the status of Barcelona star Luis Suarez still unconfirmed, Argentina will be favored at Uruguay’s home stadium, Estadio Centenario, a place they were defeated 3-2 in 2013 before the 2014 World Cup.

The two programs are separated by just one point in CONMEBOL qualifying and both have plenty of work left to do. Ecuador sits only two points behind Argentina for the final South American spot and they have a better goal differential. Another loss for Lionel Messi and company could be a kill shot – no pressure.

Considering all that’s on the line for both teams, Argentina and Uruguay could produce the best fixture of the entire upcoming World Cup qualifying slate.
