Canada Calls Up MLS Star for Round of 8 Match with Jamaica

Orlando City striker Cyle Larin joined the parade of talent on its way to the Gold Cup, adding to a Canadian attack that was a little underwhelming and one-dimensional during group play. He and the rest of Team Canada will clash with Jamaica in the Round of 8 in a match in which the Canucks are slightly favored.

SHARK BITES
  • Since 1988, Canada is 8-4-5 against Jamaica in all competitions.
  • Three of the last 4 matchups between Canada and Jamaica have ended with a 1-0 score line.
  • Jamaica ended the group stage with just 3 goals in 3 matches.

In moneyline markets, the unbeaten Canadians are +150 faves with the Reggae Boyz coming back at +200. The regulation draw, which is an attractive option giving the two teams’ scoring records, is also being offered at +190 and is worth consideration.

It’s tough to know exactly what to expect from this game but with both nations seeming perfectly happy to sit back and defend so far, we could have a snoozer on our hands. Unless, that is, Canadian manager Octavio Zambrano decides to start both Cyle Larin and Alphonso Davies up front.

Young Davies owns a share of the lead in the competition’s scoring race and he made an immediate impact as a substitution in Canada’s last group stage match against Honduras. He and Larin are the most dynamic players to dawn the red and white in quite some time and if they play like they’re capable, without undermining Zambrano’s system, Canada should get by Jamaica and begin preparations for a probable semifinal matchup against Mexico.
