Liverpool Survives Semifinal Scare vs Villarreal

Liverpool is coming off a somewhat precarious semifinal win over Villarreal as they defeated the Spanish side 5-2 on aggregate.

After the Reds took the first leg 2-0, it looked like all but a formality that the 2019 Champions League winners would be headed back to the final, though the match was far from easy.

Villarreal went up 2-0 before halftime in the second leg, putting the teams back on even terms. However, Fabinho and Luis Diaz scored crucial goals in the second half to put Liverpool back on top before Sadio Mane added another to seal the deal.

The Reds go into the final in scorching form, unbeaten in the last 18 matches and having scored 139 goals in 57 games in all competitions – the club’s highest single-season total in its 129-year history.

Last-Minute Comeback Propels Real Madrid Into Final

Real Madrid had a much tougher road to the final as they had to dispose of Manchester City, the English Premier League’s top side, in the semis. A high-scoring first leg saw City take a 4-3 lead, but Real countered with a wild 3-1 win in extra time to take the second leg and a 6-5 victory on aggregate.

Riyad Mahrez put Manchester City up 1-0 in the 73rd minute in the second leg, giving his side a seemingly insurmountable lead of 5-3 on aggregate. Los Blancos would not go quietly, though, as Rodrygo scored in the 90th and 91st minutes to even the tie on aggregate and send the match to extra time.

In extra time, it was none other than Karim Benzema who drew a foul in the Manchester City box before dispatching the penalty kick into the net to send his club to the Champions League final.

Liverpool FC vs Real Madrid Pick & Insights

Liverpool FC: Keys To Victory

Liverpool has spread out the scoring this season with plenty of offensive threats. Mohamed Salah leads the team with eight goals in the Champions League while fellow attackers Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have five each.

If that trio up top can continue their form, the Reds will be hard to stop on Saturday.

Real Madrid: Keys To Victory

Real Madrid has shown an uncanny ability to claw its way back into games with incredible comeback wins over both Manchester City and PSG in this year’s Champions League.

That fighting spirit bodes well for Real, who won’t be counted out of the final no matter what the score. Benzema has been Real’s main weapon this season with an amazing 15 goals in 11 Champions League appearances – look for him to score again in the final.
