Chelsea's Adjustment Period Could Leave Them Exposed

West Ham takes on Chelsea in Monday’s lone match in what could be one of the higher scoring games in Week 1. The Hammers finished three spots ahead of the big London club last season but will be quite the underdog at Stamford Bridge this week.

  • Dimitri Payet is not expected to start for West Ham.
  • Both matches between theses teams last season went over a 2.5 goal total.
  • Michy Batshuayi is expected to make his Premier League debut for Chelsea.

Chelsea had the worst title defense in the history of the Premier League last season and made a statement by firing Jose Mourinho, their manager at the time. They hired Antonio Conte to fill the void left by Mourinho and made a splash in the transfer window picking up N’Golo Kante and Michy Batshuayi.

I believe the turnover at key positions in Chelsea’s club will lead to an adjustment period that West Ham could take advantage of. The Hammers made significant strides last year and hosted the coming out party of French star Dimitri Payet. West Ham's starting 11 has stayed mostly intact and will have a good chance to compete Monday if Payet is able to suit up.

West Ham comes into this one as the +425 underdog as pegged by online shop Bovada and will have their work cut out for them at the hostile ground of Stamford Bridge where Chelsea will be the -155 favorite. I think this game easily breaches the 2.5 goal total that has been set for it and bettors can still grab the OVER line for -125.
