Defense to be Key in Austria vs Hungary

Austria vs Hungary Euro

In a matchup that will have a heavy hand in deciding who moves on from, what is objectively, one of the weakest groups in the 2016 Euros, Hungary takes on an Austrian team that was unbeaten in qualifying. The two squads haven’t met in Euro competition since 1975 and will faceoff Wednesday for the first time since 2006 at the Nouveau Stade Bordeaux.

  • Austria was 9-1-0 in EURO 2016 qualifying games.
  • Austria has not beaten Hungary since a 2-1 victory in 1996.
  • Hungary (4-4-2 in EURO qualifying) got into the tournament after a 1-0 playoff win over Norway.

Austria is a fairly heavy favorite heading into this one as Bovada has them -135 on the money line and Hungary at +425 with the draw set at +255. This match is -140 to go OVER a modest two goal total and +125 to be a one nil win either way.

Hungary qualified for the Euro’s this year for the first time since 1972 and will look to get their first win at the Euro’s since 1964.

Austria has a wealth of high-level club talent on their backline who contributed to their unbeaten qualifying record. David Alaba, Aleksandar Dragovic and their captain, Christian Fuchs, will all look to keep the ball out of the Austrian net.
