Eden Hazard Chelsea vs Manchester United Betting Preview

Gameweek 9 Starts with a Bang as Chelsea Hosts Manchester United

Chelsea fans and bettors really couldn’t have asked for a better start under new manager Maurizio Sarri. The Blues are unbeaten through eight matches thus far in the Premier League season and now get to host a Manchester United side that has looked completely dysfunctional in large swaths, but is coming off a potentially character-building win against Newcastle last time out.

Online shop Sportsbook is currently offering Chelsea as favorites at -140 in moneyline markets with United coming back at +400 and the draw at +285. The total is tabbed at 2.5 with OVER -125 and UNDER +105. As for the spread, Chelsea is the half-goal fave at -150 with the Red Devils at +125 as dogs.

There’s some great value no matter what side you like here. You won’t get United at 4/1 in moneyline markets too often and Chelsea’s value on home turf is nice looking as well.

Let’s dig into this game and find some bets, shall well?

Surprisingly One-Sided History

Considering these are two of the biggest clubs not just in the country, but in the world, it might be surprising to some to see how one-sided recent head-to-head meetings have gone between these two.

First and foremost, Man United hasn’t won at Stamford Bridge since 2012. In five league meetings at Stamford Bridge since, Chelsea has four wins and one draw and has outscored United 10-2 in those games.

Furthermore, across all competitions, the Blues have beaten Manchester United nine times, lost just twice and drawn five in the last 16 meetings, all spanning from the day Man U last beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 2012.

Brilliant Start to the Sarri Era

I’ve sort of written about it ad nauseam, but Maurizio Sarri’s start in London has been truly fantastic. In what has been a competitive beginning to the Premier League season, Chelsea is one of three teams without a loss. Along with Manchester City and Liverpool, all three have six wins and two draws through eight games.

The Blues sit second thanks to a +13 goal differential, behind Man City’s +18 and ahead of Liverpool’s +12 due to 18 goals scored (third in the league) and just five goals conceded (second).

Sarri has Chelsea playing his distinct brand of football and the Blues sit second in the league in possession (62.7%), second in shots per game (17.8), second in pass accuracy (88.2%), fourth in dribbles per game (8.4) and fourth in shots on target per game (5.9).

Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard has really benefited from Sarri’s stamp on Chelsea’s tactics. He enters the weekend leading the Premier League in goals (seven) and has added three assists playing in the Lorenzo Insigne role from Sarri’s brilliant Napoli days.

Leaky at the Back

Manchester United has had issues this season to be sure, not the least of which are the well-documented spats between manager Jose Mourinho and star Paul Pogba. But really, defensively, United is a mess.

With 14 goals allowed in eight games, nobody in the top 15 of the Premier League table has conceded more goals than Mourinho’s United. That number ties them for fourth-most in the league with Southampton and behind only Fulham (21), Cardiff (17) and Huddersfield (17).

For a bit of perspective, United conceded just 28 goals in the entirety of last season and 29 the season before so they’re basically halfway there through just eight games.

Ninja’s Pick

Easy one for me. With Chelsea at -140 on the moneyline, I’ll gladly take a bit of that. I’m not a fan of what’s going on at United and will look to play against them in spots until relationships are mended and defensive issues get sorted.
