Euro 2020 Qualifying Results

Belgium

Belgium remained perfect in the group stages of qualifying, winning 10 of 10 games to lead Group I. Belgium scored 40 goals and conceded just three, giving it a massive goal differential of +37.

Denmark

Denmark’s entry into the main tournament was not as straightforward. It sneaked into the second spot in a tight Group D, behind Switzerland. Denmark won four and drew four games to finish with 16 points, three points ahead of the Republic of Ireland.

Russia

Apart from two losses against Belgium in Group I, Russia was unbeatable in the group stage of qualifying. Russia won its remaining eight games to finish second in the group.

Finland

Finland had just a bit more depth to help sneak past Greece and finish second in Group J, behind Italy. Finland had 18 points, four points ahead of Greece.

Euro 2020 Group B Odds Analysis

Belgium (-135) is a star-filled team, capable of beating any other team in the world with its current depth. In terms of form, Belgium has won 10 of its last 10 in qualifying. Is it any surprise that Belgium is a massive favorite to win this group? Not really.

I’m a bit surprised that Russia (+425) and Denmark (+260) aren’t closer together on the oddsboard for Euro 2020 Group B betting. Denmark seems to be better, albeit only slightly, on paper from a personnel standpoint. However, Russia is a well-coached team with an impressive history in major tournaments.

Finland (+1800) is playing its first major tournament so these odds are probably justified, particularly in a tough group.

Euro 2020 Group B Betting Tips

If you dig deeper into Belgium’s squad, you would notice unparalleled depth compared to the rest of the group. If Eden Hazard is fit, that roster becomes even more compelling to back for a final-four finish. The odds for Belgium to win Euro 2020 Group B are probably fair at -135.

Belgium’s implied probability to win the group, according to Odds Shark’s calculator, is 57.45 percent. Even though Denmark and Russia will certainly make Belgium work to lead the group, there is just too much skill and confidence in this team to slip up in the biggest European national tournament.

I’d be going with the probability on this one and backing Belgium to win as my Euro 2020 Group B pick. Apart from just Group B, Belgium could be a serious favorite to go all the way, even to the final of this tournament, provided its players can stay healthy for the entirety of the event.

Euro 2020 Group B Value Picks

Considering this will be Finland’s first major, there is a chance of being overwhelmed on the big stage because of a lack of experience. Even though its Euro 2020 Group B betting odds of +1800 are tempting, I’d stay away from that.

Instead, you could have a look at Russia or Denmark to upset Belgium. In shorter-format tournaments, the lesser-skilled teams have a greater chance of an upset. Russia has performed admirably in qualifying. Artem Dzyuba is a capable leader on the offensive end. Russia also has a group of well-coached youngsters, including 23-year-old Aleksandr Sobolev.

Russia’s implied probability, according to its Euro 2020 Group B betting odds, is 19 percent. That’s not too bad for a team as solid as Russia.

A Detailed Analysis on Belgium

Coaching

Head coach: Roberto Martinez

Martinez took charge of Belgium in 2016 and has remained at the helm since.

Quote from the manager: “In terms of logistics, it’s probably the hardest we could’ve had, playing Russia in Saint Petersburg in the first game and then Denmark in the second in Copenhagen, and then going back to Saint Petersburg. We need to adjust our preparation and we’ll make sure that the logistics are just right.”

Player to watch: Kevin De Bruyne, of course. De Bruyne sustained a few injuries while playing for Manchester City this year. However, his ability and skill hasn’t deteriorated as a result. Martinez will hope that De Bruyne doesn’t face additional damage as a packed season draws to a close.

Top scorer in qualifying: Romelu Lukaku scored seven goals to lead his team in qualifying.

Euro 2016 result: Belgium made a fine run in the previous edition up until the quarterfinals, where it lost to Wales 3-1.

Best result in past Euro cups: Back in 1980, Belgium finished as runner-up, its best result in this competition.

Fun fact: According to FIFA’s current world ranking, Belgium is the No. 1 team in the world. Belgium has 1,783 points, not too far ahead of second-place France (1,757 points) and third-place Brazil (1,742 points).

Predicted Finish in Group B: Our Euro 2020 Group B betting prediction for Belgium is first.

A Detailed Analysis on Denmark

Coaching

Head coach: Kasper Hjulmand

Hjulmand was to take over from Åge Hareide following the Euro tournament last year. Despite the competition’s postponement to 2021, Hjulmand took charge in 2020. In 2011-12, Hjulmand led Nordsjælland to the title in Denmark. He also has experience of coaching in the Bundesliga, having managed Mainz.

Player to watch: Christian Eriksen will be the playmaker for Denmark in this competition. He was also Denmark’s top scorer in the qualifying tournament.

Top scorer in qualifying: Christian Eriksen scored five goals to lead Denmark in qualifying.

Euro 2016 result: Did not qualify.

Best result in past Euro cups: A triumphant run in 1992 when Denmark won the competition made that its best result.

Fun fact: During that 1992 tournament, Denmark failed to qualify for the main event. However, it received an entry 10 days before the competition began after Yugoslavia was excluded.

Predicted Finish in Group B: Our Euro 2020 Group B betting prediction for Denmark is third.

A Detailed Analysis on Russia

Coaching

Head coach: Stanislav Cherchesov

Stanislav Cherchesov became head coach of Russia in 2016. He helped the team to an impressive result in the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a quarterfinal finish.

Quote from the manager: “Finland have qualified for the Euro with ease, which says a lot about the team’s abilities. We play the last match in the group in Denmark and against Denmark, so it could’ve been better.”

Player to watch: Artem Dzyuba is Russia’s captain for this competition. He is also the country’s leading goalscorer among active players. His aerial strength makes him a target from dead-ball situations as was the case during qualifying.

Top scorer in qualifying: Artem Dzyuba scored nine goals in qualifying.

Euro 2016 result: Russia didn’t progress past the group stage in the previous edition after a disappointing run in the main event.

Best result in past Euro cups: In more recent times, Russia finished as a semifinalist in 2008. However, the country won the tournament back in 1960 as USSR.

Fun fact: Of its last five meetings against Belgium, the Soviet Union won four. In the last of those games, Belgium won 4-3 after extra time in the last 16 at the 1986 World Cup.

Predicted Finish in Group B: Our Euro 2020 Group B betting prediction for Russia is second.

A Detailed Analysis on Finland

Coaching

Head coach: Markku Kanerva

For a period of 12 years, Kanerva served as assistant to the main team as well as being in charge of the under-21 team. He finally was promoted to head coach of Finland in 2016.

Quote from the manager: “I’m very satisfied that we are going to play in Group B with Belgium, Denmark and Russia. And it’s very nice to start the tournament playing against Denmark, one of our naughty neighbors.”

Player to watch: Apart from the obvious choice of Teemu Pukki, Fredrik Jensen will be a young player to watch for in this Finland team. He is 23 years old and has already shown a propensity to put himself in advantageous positions in the box to score goals.

Top scorer in qualifying: Teemu Pukki scored 10 goals to lead Finland in qualifying.

Euro 2016 result: Did not qualify.

Best result in past Euro cups: This will be Finland’s first appearance in the final tournament. It beat Liechtenstein 3-0 in 2019 to ensure qualification for its first major tournament.

Fun fact: Finland’s first match of the Euro finals will be against Denmark. Finland hasn’t beaten Denmark in Denmark since 1949. Since that 2-0 result in a friendly match in September 1949, Denmark has won 18 and drawn three against Finland at home.

Predicted Finish in Group B: Our Euro 2020 Group B betting prediction for Finland is fourth.

Euro 2020 Group B Predictions

Let’s start with the easy choices. My Euro 2020 Group B prediction for a fourth-place finish is Finland. There is just too much to overcome on the grandest of stages against teams that have been here several times before and triumphed. Teemu Pukki will score goals but he won’t receive sufficient help in order to win games, which will be the key metric in this group.

Then comes the class of Denmark. Christian Eriksen will be charged with leading the distribution of the ball and transitioning from the middle to the final third. Their Euro 2020 Group B odds suggest they have an implied probability of 27.78 percent. However, there is an upset in the cards for Denmark, either spectacularly from Finland or not unexpectedly from Russia, which could result in its elimination.

Which teams will advance?

The game that could decide this group is on June 12 between Belgium and Russia at Saint Petersburg Stadium. More than goals, Russia relies on staying compact in the middle third of a soccer pitch. Set pieces from corners and free kicks are a big part of its preferred modus operandi. However, if there is one team that can break that method down easily, it’s Belgium.

On November 16, 2019, these sides met at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in the penultimate qualifier. Two goals from Eden Hazard, one from brother Thorgan Hazard and another from Romelu Lukaku gave Belgium a 4-1 win. It marked the first time Russia had conceded four goals at home in a competitive game.

If Russia can stay steady at the back, it might be too good for Denmark and Finland, which will be enough to ensure qualification to the next stage of this tournament.

Our Euro 2020 Group B prediction is as follows: Belgium to lead the group with enviable comfort, Russia to sneak into second with solid performances through the group stage, Denmark to finish third after one substandard performance and Finland to settle for fourth place in a highly competitive group.
