England Massive Favorites To Advance Against Ukraine

Ukraine takes on England in a Euro 2020 quarterfinal on Saturday.

England (10-1-1, 7-2-3 ATS) are huge favorites to continue their stellar run at Euro 2020 when they face a gritty Ukraine team in the quarterfinal of the competition in Rome on Saturday evening. England are yet to concede a goal at this tournament, an indicator of their defensive prowess.

Opening Odds Analysis

The odds have changed quite a bit for this match. The consensus has changed even further in favor of England, which is understandable considering their defensive form at Euro 2020. Ukraine started at odds of +450 but have now jumped drastically to +804.

That slight change in consensus is the reason for this major movement. The draw’s price started at odds of +250 but has now moved up to +336. England, who started as -150 favorites to win in normal time, have moved to -218 favorites.

Ukraine News & Notes

Ukraine have also come through an emotional Round of 16. They took an early lead against Sweden before an equalizer ensured extra time was needed. An early red card in extra time changed the dynamics of that match. Eventually, with only minutes remaining, Ukraine scored to complete qualification into the quarterfinal.

Ukraine have not been anywhere near their best form but have still managed to come all the way to the quarters. That has been a result of some luck and some passionate defending. You would expect nothing less from a team coach by Andriy Shevchenko. With due respect to their previous opponents, Ukraine will have to find their absolute best for this match against their toughest challenge in Euro 2020.

"England are a great team, they have a deep bench, an outstanding coaching staff and we are fully aware how tough this game is going to be. They are incredibly difficult to score against but their strength shouldn't scare us. It should motivate us because everything is possible in football as in life and we will play our hearts out to give our fans even more to cheer about,” Ukraine coach Andriy Shevchenko said.

Ukraine have actually been quite solid in the final third at Euro 2020. They have taken 45 shots on goal, of which 18 have been on target (sixth highest, tied with France in that metric). They have had a possession issue, maintaining the ball for just 48.5 percent of the time in their matches. But they have still maintained precision, completing 1,847 passes out of 2,150 total passes at an accuracy rate of 85.8 percent, ninth best at this competition, only slightly behind England.

England News & Notes

England have been outstanding at Euro 2020. Sure, they have lacked offensive spirit and creativity in the final third, which is peculiar for a team with that much depth. However, that is the style they have adopted and it has undeniably worked. So, all credit to Gareth Southgate for an approach that is not exactly pleasurable to watch.

England are yet to concede a goal at Euro 2020. They have enjoyed four clean sheets and have not really come close to conceding, apart from Thomas Muller’s astonishing miss in the closing stages of the Round of 16 against Germany. England have made 38 tackles at Euro 2020 and have successfully completed 23 of them. England were atypically loose with the ball against Germany at Wembley but were slightly fortunate that they were not made to pay. You can expect a much cleaner performance from the title favorites with much lesser pressure against Ukraine.

Also, Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell have both completed their isolation periods after coming in close contact with Billy Gilmour, who had earlier tested positive for the coronavirus. England might not need to tinker with their winning combination, but Mount could come in for some speed and tactical precision in the middle third.

"Ukraine are a good side. I've been really impressed with what Andriy's done with them. They had a couple of sticky results through the autumn, through the Nations League but they've bounced back, and they got a very good result in France, in the World Cup qualifiers and again this week against Sweden. If we give them space to play, they'll play, and they've got some dangerous forwards. We've achieved one challenge but that's not the Everest we set ourselves. We want to push on,” England coach Gareth Southgate said.

Betting Pick 1: England -218

This will be the first match for England outside Wembley Stadium in the knockouts of Euro 2020. While home-ground advantage is surely a factor, there are other considerations to be made here, such as England’s incredible bench strength.

For example, Jack Grealish made a telling contribution after he was brought on. Ukraine do not have the same level of depth of personnel, either on the bench or even in the starting XI to stay with this England team. For footballing reasons, England should cruise to the semi finals of Euro 2020.

Betting Pick 2: Handicap 3-way: England -1 (+125)

This betting market essentially means that England will win by more than one goal. To have such certainty around a -1 handicap market in a quarter final of a major international tournament, there should be sufficient evidence of dominance.

England have already shown there is plenty. England are unlikely to concede against a Ukraine team that might not have enough depth on the offensive end, which should result in a 2-0 win for England, or even more.
