France vs Romania Kicks Off Euro 2016

France Romania Euro 2016

As is tradition, the host nation starts the tournament after the opening ceremony. This year, it’s France’s turn and they start their journey with a match against Romania in Group A action. The sides have met twice before in European competition; the first was in Euro ’96 where France ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a Christophe Duggary goal and the second was in 2008 where it ended in a stalemate.

  • This will be the first time Romania is taking part in an opening match in any international tournament.
  • France has won 1 opening match as hosts vs Denmark in 1984 and lost the other vs Yugoslavia in 1960.
  • Historically, Romania have been slow starters, failing to win any of their first matches. (0-1, 1-1 and 0-0).

Current odds at online sportsbook Bovada have France as a -325 moneyline favorite, with Romania coming back at +1100 and a draw at +400.

Despite the difference in quality and rankings, the most recent meetings between these clubs have been tight. Four of the last five have ended in draws, mostly in the qualifying for Euro competitions.

France is one of three nations who have won the championships when hosting it in 1984, with Spain (1964) and Italy (1968) being the others. They’re also one of the teams who have won the tournament on more than one occasion, having won it twice, with Spain and Germany each winning three times.

In order to leave their mark early on in the tournament, France will have to start well and prove the young side deserves to keep their status as favorites. On the other hand, Romania have run them close in recent matches and they’ll be looking for an upset and to reach the knockout stages for the first time since 2000.

This certainly has the ingredients to be a tasty, interesting match and in the early stages of big tournaments, anything can happen. Based on the general quality and form of the teams, the location and history, it’s difficult to look past the hosts.
