2019 Liga MX Clausura Liguilla Futures

Liga MX Future Odds

With only one week to go in the regular season, seven out of eight teams have already clinched their place in the 2019 Liga MX Clausura Liguilla. Tigres UANL remain the absolute favorites to lift the trophy, but Club León, Club América, and Monterrey aren't far behind the Universitarios in the race for the title.

América are Set for a Tough First Round

For the sake of the CONCACAF Champions League Final, where Monterrey and Tigres UANL will go ahead and decide the top team in the CONCACAF region, it perhaps makes sense to avoid the teams from Nuevo León just for this week. We know both are already qualified for the Liguilla, and no matter what happens in the second leg of their final, both will be contenders in the Liga MX playoffs.

This brings us to one of the other two teams in the top four that the oddsmakers have as legitimate favorites to win the title, Club América. Las Águilas managed to avert crisis on Saturday by beating Santos Laguna at the Estadio Azteca and officially sealing their place in the Liguilla. It was only the team's first win in their last four Liga MX matches but it was enough to avoid a scenario in which Las Águilas would arrive to the last week of the regular season still without a spot in the playoffs.

However, if you are keeping tabs of América's chances of winning back-to-back titles, one scenario that almost seems unavoidable at this point is that they could end up playing a team from Nuevo León or Cruz Azul in the Quarterfinals. Barring a combination of results that would cause Las Águilas to leap all the way up to fourth place in the standings, it is looking like a foregone conclusion that América will face a tough matchup in the first round. This obviously makes América's path to the title a lot harder and something worth considering when going heavy on Las Águilas.

León Were Warned

A team that could potentially start trending down soon is Club León. La Fiera are guaranteed to finish the 2019 Liga MX Clausura regular season at the top of the league table, but their performance against Chivas on Saturday served as a big warning ahead of the Liguilla. Chivas, who have been one of the worst teams in Mexico this season, shocked León to a 2-1 win and in the process ended their record-breaking Liga MX winning streak at 12 games. Above all, though, Chivas gave what looked like a pretty good formula of how to beat León, something that teams will definitely look to replicate against La Fiera in the Liguilla.

The comparisons have been made in the past, but like the Seattle Mariners and Golden State Warriors of yesteryears, it matters very little if you break records during the regular season. At the end of the day, if you don't win the title, you are nothing.

What about the Rest of the teams in The Liguilla?

For the most part, it looks like we can just ignore the teams outside the top four in the oddsmakers' favorites list. Naturally, Cruz Azul is fifth behind Tigres, Club León, Club América, and Monterrey, but there doesn't seem to be any indication that La Máquina are ready to mount a serious challenge for the title.

Meanwhile, Pachuca remain an option as a surprise team, but a lot of things would need to go their way if they are to lift the title. Necaxa, on the other hand, can pretty much be taken out completely, considering they just sold their best player, Brian Fernandez, just a week before the start of the Liguilla.

As for Xolos de Tijuana and Puebla, odds are they won't go very far in the Liguilla, if they even make it.
