Liga MX Update: Monterrey looks like the real deal

Rogelio Funes Mori Monterrey Odds to Win 2019 Liga MX Clausura Mexico soccer

Week 4 of Liga MX was full of surprises, but while Club América remains the favorite to lift the 2019 Liga MX Clausura title, Monterrey has now narrowed the gap at the top of the oddsboard following its 3-2 victory over Las Águilas.

Undefeated no more! After more than five months without a defeat in Liga MX, Club América suffered its first collapse of the season, as Monterrey claimed a chaotic 3-2 win over Las Águilas. This was a huge win for Monterrey, which flexed its muscles against the defending champs and moved to the top of the league table with the win.

Monterrey hasn’t always been convincing, but if the team manages to stay healthy, odds are it will continue to be among the top contenders to win the trophy. In particular, star striker Rogelio Funes Mori was fantastic for Rayados, and his eventual winner showed exactly why he is rated as one of the top forwards in Mexico. Funes Mori has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, and if he continues to hit his stride, there is very little stopping Monterrey from finishing the season in the top three.

As for Club América, this should be considered a small stumble. Barring a negative streak of sorts, Las Águilas will remain the favorites to repeat as champions. If anything, many would say that we just witnessed a possible preview of the 2019 Liga MX Clausura final.

Chivas falls, Santos gains some ground

Like with Club América, it is futile to overreact over a single defeat. After trending up in the first three weeks of the season, Chivas Guadalajara also suffered its first defeat of the campaign, falling 1-0 to Santos Laguna. The Rebaño Sagrado have moved up considerably in the odds table, and this should be considered no more than a small step backwards for the Rojiblancos.

That said, Santos Laguna was able to shut down Chivas through the course of the 90 minutes. Santos is currently seventh in the league table and has always been highly rated by the oddsmakers. They won this competition exactly a year ago, and though they don’t receive the same focus as the bigger teams in Mexico, they certainly have the arguments to quietly put themselves in position to win big.

Despite Liga MX being known as a league full of surprises, we rarely see teams jump from nowhere to turn into genuine contenders for the title. Chances are that the 2019 Liga MX Clausura won’t be the exception, but in case you think otherwise, two teams immediately jump out after four weeks.

Potential for a surprise

On the one hand, Atlas has started the season positively and has received a nice boost from the oddsmakers. The Rojinegros haven’t won a league title since 1951, and that should be your first red flag. However, Atlas is no stranger to sneaking into the Liguilla, and as I always say prior to the playoffs, it’s all about momentum.

Moreover, Atlas has been hampered heavily by injuries during the last few seasons. Thus far they’ve managed to do an excellent job in staying healthy, and considering the nice array of young Mexican talent they have at their disposal, you could do worse than Atlas.

The other team that has slowly been gaining admirers this season is Necaxa. Along with Monterrey, the Rayos are the only other undefeated team left in this Clausura. Given the fast start to their season, they have managed to jump several positions in the oddsboard and are currently tied with several teams for that No. 10 spot.

Sure, they don’t have nearly the same talent as the teams at the top, but their defensive style of play can give them a nice advantage come Liguilla time. For now, they are just simply a team to watch out for as the season unfolds.
