Liga MX Update: Three teams remain 2-0

Andre-Pierre Gignac Odds to Win Liga MX Clausura 2019 soccer Mexico

Week 2 of the 2019 Liga MX Clausura has come and gone and Club América remains the favorite to lift the title. Fresh off their 2-1 win over Atlas in their tournament debut, the defending champs continue to look unstoppable atop the favorites list. However, Monterrey, Tigres UANL, Cruz Azul and Toluca remain closely behind Las Águilas.

Let’s start off with the teams that started the season 2-0. Not much has changed on the oddsboard for the Diablos Rojos, but credit has to go to Hernan Cristante’s men for being one of three teams to start the season with two straight wins. The Diablos Rojos came into this tournament after letting go of arguably their best player, Rubens Sambueza, but made some smart signings in Felipe Pardo, Emmanuel Gigliotti and Federico Mancuello.

The one caveat for Toluca, however, is they have experienced a relatively easy first two weeks. Games against Monarcas Morelia and Puebla are games they should win, and bettors would like to see that against better-quality opposition before jumping on the bandwagon.

Coincidentally, Toluca’s next game is against none other than Chivas, which also started the season 2-0. The Rebaño Sagrado have been one of the feel-good stories of the young season and looked good in victories against Xolos de Tijuana and Cruz Azul. The win against the latter was the more impressive, given that it was against one of last season’s Liga MX finalists. Currently, Chivas still finds itself behind Pumas UNAM and Pachuca in the odds list, but you’d imagine that will change real soon if it can get the victory against Toluca.

As for the other team with a 2-0 record, Lobos BUAP has been a pleasant surprise, but unless the team goes on a Leicester-like run, you are better off looking elsewhere.

Two teams still feeling the effects of last season

While Club América enjoyed plenty of success in its first game of the campaign, the other two teams from Mexico City haven’t been able to have the same luck.

On the one hand, the aforementioned Cruz Azul looks to still be weeping from their Liga MX final defeat to Las Águilas and have started their season winless in their first two games. As opposed to last season, when it comes to placing futures bets on La Máquina, perhaps the best course to take is to see if this continues. Because while Cruz Azul remains one of the more competitive sides in the league, they do have a tendency to cave under pressure.

Meanwhile, Pumas UNAM has been a complete disappointment after two weeks. The oddsmakers still have the Universitarios particularly high because of their third-place finish last season, but the only way seems to be down for coach David Patiño and his team following a 2-1 defeat to Necaxa. I’m not sure anybody had Pumas as real front-runners, and it’s only natural they regress after playing some woeful football last season and still managing to finish in the top three.

Tigres flex their early-season muscle

Elsewhere around the league, Tigres got an impressive 3-0 victory over Xolos de Tijuana, who are quickly falling out of favor after an 0-2 start. Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti’s side is not known for fast starts, but they gave a small glimpse of their potential over the border side.

The problem with Tigres is you’ll never see the oddsmakers undervalue them. They could go on to have a slow start to their season but still rank among the top three to lift the title. Obviously, that’s because they have such a gifted squad, but it will be interesting to see what happens with Tigres after the start of the CONCACAF Champions League, a tournament they will likely prioritize heavily as the Liga MX season wears on.
