Liga MX Update: Tigres and Monterrey are two different contenders

Francisco Eduardo Venegas Tigres Odds to Win 2018-19 Liga MX Clausura Mexico soccer

It was an eventful week in Liga MX, but as has been the case all season, Club América remains the favorite to win the 2019 Liga MX Clausura. But while Las Águilas remain steady in their quest to secure back-to-back titles, plenty of teams behind them continue to struggle for consistency.

For better or for worse, it hasn’t been a typical start for a lot of teams sitting behind the defending champions in the odds list. More specifically, we have to talk about the two teams from Monterrey.

On the one hand, Tigres have always been known as slow starters. However, the Felinos have broken tradition and are looking like real contenders early in the season. Sure, their home form is a little worrying, but you get the feeling they’ll get that fixed as the season progresses. Tigres have one of the best squads in Mexico, and if they can avoid any major injuries, they are primed to be one of the eight teams fighting for the title come the month of May.

Meanwhile, like Tigres and América, Monterrey has always been in the top three in the favorites list. The big problem with Rayados is consistency. It’s really hard to predict which Monterrey team will come out on any given day. It’s not a secret that Monterrey fans continue to be iffy on manager Diego Alonso, and when their team is struggling to put away sides like Pumas UNAM, they have every reason to complain.

That said, Monterrey already beat Club América once this season, and they have a pretty straightforward path to the playoffs. Last season against Cruz Azul in the semifinals, they came very close to upsetting La Máquina. It’s fair to say Monterrey is a better team this season than last, and that’s reason enough to believe they can go all the way.

Toluca is trending down

Another one of the teams that had a down week was Toluca. The oddsmakers continue to be high on the Diablos Rojos, but they are currently sitting in the bottom half of the table with only six points.

Hernan Cristante’s men are usually a constant when it comes to teams making the Liguilla, but there is the sense that the team hasn’t really improved from two seasons ago when they made the Liga MX final. The Diablos Rojos tend to be real patient with their managers, which is why Cristante has been relatively pressure-free through the course of the last two campaigns. It’s still early in the campaign, and to be fair, their schedule has been among the most difficult in the first month of play. But at the moment, the Diablos Rojos are trending down and you’d expect the oddsmakers to feel the same way eventually.

Same old Chivas

In addition to Toluca, one of the teams that the oddsmakers continue to be quite fond of is Chivas. The Guadalajara outfit was seemingly unaffected by their defeat to Santos Laguna and have made the biggest jump in the favorites list from all the teams in this Clausura.

Chivas, though, was another one of the teams behind América that had a disappointing week. The Rebaño Sagrado failed to take care of business against arguably one of the worst sides in Mexico, Veracruz, and had to settle for a scoreless draw.

Perhaps most worrying for Chivas is they looked exactly like the Chivas team from the last two seasons. Just when you think they are set to go on a positive run of games, they always seem to find a way to fail to fulfill expectations. Obviously, this is a big negative if you are thinking of putting your money on Chivas to win the title.
