Liga MX Update: Tigres and Rayados flex their muscles ahead of big game

Eduardo Vargas Tigres UANL Odds to Win 2019 Liga MX Clausura soccer Mexico

With all eyes set in the city of Monterrey, it is Tigres and Rayados who continue to lead the way in the list of favorites to win the 2019 Liga MX Clausura.

Another week is in the books, and Week 10 has a treat for us as the top two sides in the league table face off in the Clásico Regiomontano. The theme this season continues to be the same from the last few weeks. Both Tigres and Monterrey keep setting the pace and there seems to be very little stopping them.

In the case of Tigres, they continue to be top of the league table and their win streak is now up to six straight. Most impressive of all, they’ve managed to stay afloat despite being without their star player, Andre-Pierre Gignac, who has been injured in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Monterrey remains the only undefeated team left in the Clausura. Their depth is their biggest strength and there is perhaps no team better equipped to compete in multiple tournaments than los Rayados.

What makes next week’s Clásico Regiomontano so intriguing is that there is no debate that these are currently the two best teams in Mexico. As such, what happens in this game will likely decide who will be the front-runner to win it all as we enter the second half of the season.

Cruz Azul is back

After falling out of the title discussion, last year’s finalist Cruz Azul returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Necaxa. Understandably, Cruz Azul has been outside the spotlight for a few weeks now, and before last Saturday’s win, La Máquina had gone six straight games without a win across all competitions.

At the start of the season, the oddsmakers were quite high on Cruz Azul getting back into title contention, but a slow start has really kept La Máquina out of the discussion. Though they are still in for a fight to get back into Liguilla positions, Cruz Azul remains an interesting bet. We are talking about a team that made the Liga MX final last year and just had the misfortune of facing a red-hot Club América team in the final.

Like last season, not much has changed tactically with Cruz Azul, and due to their defensive nature under coach Pedro Caixinha, they certainly have a kind of edge in the playoffs. For now, Cruz Azul might just be a team worth keeping an eye out for. If they get hot, however, you just never know what can happen, especially in Liga MX.

Welcome to Tijuana

Trending up right now is Xolos de Tijuana. Following a win over Atlas, the Fronterizos suddenly find themselves fourth in the league table and undefeated in their last five Liga MX matches.

Tijuana was never really considered a genuine contender at the start of the season, and a slow start did very little to change that. However, slowly but surely the side from the border has responded to new coach Oscar Pareja’s style of play and many are starting to think Tijuana might have an outside chance.

Perhaps most importantly about Xolos’ recent success has been its home form. Tijuana has always been at their best when they manage to make it tough for opposing teams at the Estadio Caliente, and after losing their first home game of the season to Tigres, they’ve now won three straight.

Obviously, it is too early to get excited about Xolos, but people forget this team won a Liga MX title only a few years back. If they manage to evade inconsistency problems, there is no telling just how far this team can make it in the playoffs.
