Roger Martinez Monterrey vs Club América Betting Odds Preview Liga MX soccer Mexico

Two heavyweights clash as Monterrey plays host to América

Club América will look to make it three wins in three games when it takes on Monterrey in one of the marquee matchups within Week 4 of the 2019 Liga MX Clausura.

So far so good for the defending champions. Miguel Herrera’s men arrive to this match having won their first two games of the season after giving Pachuca a 3-0 thumping at the Estadio Azteca. But things are set to get a lot more difficult as they take on arguably their toughest opponent yet. Monterrey is second in the league table with seven points and is fresh off an impressive victory over Querétaro in Week 3. After going down to 10 men, Los Rayados were able to come from a goal down to clinch a late victory thanks to a Maximiliano Meza stunner.

SHARK BITES
  • Club América has lost just once in its last six head-to-head meetings with Monterrey across all competitions.
  • Five of the last six head-to-head meetings between these two clubs have finished in the UNDER.
  • Monterrey has not lost in its last eight Liga MX home matches.

América keeps rolling

At this point, it can get a bit tiring listing just how good Club América has been in Liga MX through the course of the last few months. Yes, Las Águilas still haven’t lost since August of last year and, yes, they continue to look impossible to beat. Their latest victim was Pachuca at the Estadio Azteca. Although many thought the match was going to be a close affair, Las Águilas dominated Los Tuzos from start to finish.

Perhaps what has been most impressive from América in its first two matches is the consistency the team has carried over from last season. You’d expect that a team that just won the title would regress a little or feel a bit hung over. Well, not this América team. The players continue to treat every match with the seriousness it deserves. You could even say they are starting to look a lot like the Golden State Warriors of Liga MX, given that there just doesn’t look to be a team capable enough of dethroning this team at the present moment.

Advantage home team

All that said, if there is one team that can give Club América a run for its money, it is definitely Monterrey. They have arguably one of the most stacked squads in Latin America, and the oddsmakers have Los Rayados as serious contenders for the title just behind Las Águilas.

Historically, they’ve also managed to stand their ground well when facing América, especially when playing in Monterrey. Oddly enough, when these teams face each other, the home team almost always tends to get a positive result. In fact, the last time a home team lost in this matchup was all the way back in 2014, a total of 12 matches back. For Monterrey, that is six straight matches without a defeat at home against Las Águilas, with three of those being wins.

Advantage home team pt. 2

This brings us to how well Monterrey has been playing at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer. While Los Rayados haven’t exactly been a juggernaut at home, they have managed to string a few positive results together in the last few weeks. They’ve managed to go unbeaten in each of their last eight home games in Liga MX, winning seven of those eight league matches.

Nonetheless, their only home game thus far this season was also their only draw through the course of said streak, settling for a 2-2 draw with Club León back in Week 2. It was a match in which Los Rayados appeared to have been cruising to a comfortable victory, but León scored two unanswered goals in the final minutes of the match to snatch a point from Monterrey.

My take on the game...

I can see why one would be inclined to think Monterrey has enough in its arsenal to get the victory over Las Águilas. However, Monterrey generally struggles against the better teams in the league, which is why I’m going with a draw. América hasn’t seen great days in Monterrey, but the champs just can’t lose at the moment.
