Odds to Win Liga MX Apertura: Club América Starts the Season Hot

Agustin Marchesin Club America Odds to Win 2019 Liga MX Apertura Mexico soccer

With one week of action already in the books, the 2019 Liga MX Apertura is shaping up to be another exciting tournament. While there were no major surprises during Week 1, teams like Tigres UANL, who remain the favorites to win the competition, and Club América solidified their positions as the teams to beat in this Apertura.

Let’s start off by talking about Club América. Las Águilas started the tournament all guns blazing, defeating Monterrey 4-2 at the Estadio Azteca for their first win of the competition. Sure, Las Águilas took advantage of some horrendous defending from the Rayados, but Miguel Herrera’s side sent out a statement by beating one of the major contenders for the title.

Herrera has said it bluntly, this is perhaps the best side he has ever coached in his career, and you can see why. Las Águilas have depth in nearly every department, and in Agustin Marchesin they have arguably the best goalkeeper in the whole league.

Yes, it is still early days, but América is more than passing the eye test. After securing the Campeon de Campeones title and beating Monterrey, it might not be a bad idea to go all-in on the Mexico City outfit.

Club León Sends Out an Early Statement

Another team that sent out a statement this week was none other than last year’s finalist, Club León. La Fiera were sensational in their first game of the Apertura, defeating Pachuca at the Estadio Hidalgo by a score of 3-1.

For Club León, it will be all about consistency. Let’s not forget this is a team that had a record-breaking campaign last season, only to fall short at the very end against Tigres. León is in a position similar to that of the Denver Nuggets next season in the NBA, where nobody expects them to do as well during the regular season but still expects them to make it further than they did in the postseason.

That said, apart from consistency, the other defining factor for León might be keeping the squad healthy. León suffered with injuries through the course of the latter part of last season, and that is something to be mindful about as this season progresses.

Look, nobody is denying that León can win the title this season, but physically and mentally, they need to be in the right state of mind. If there is one major difference between León and the rest of the teams that are considered contenders, it is that La Fiera don’t have the same amount of depth in their squad.

Chivas Proving Oddsmakers Wrong in a Bad Way

No surprise here, Chivas started the season in nightmare fashion, losing 3-0 to Santos Laguna. For whatever reason, the oddsmakers have been quite high on Chivas, despite the fact this is a team that is openly fighting to avoid relegation. The rojiblancos have been in a downward spiral for months, and at this point in time, it would be crazy to bet on them to win the league title. To put things into perspective, Chivas hasn’t won an away game since the month of January. If there is any bet you should be making with Chivas, it is on their coach, Tomas Boy, to be the first manager fired in the 2019 Liga MX Apertura.

Pumas Climbing Up

One team the oddsmakers rated below Chivas ahead of the new season was Pumas UNAM. However, the Universitarios are quickly becoming the pick of a lot of people for surprise team of the Apertura. Pumas started the season with a 2-0 win over newcomers Atletico San Luis, and while their first game was far from perfect, especially on the defensive side of things, you get the feeling that they will only get better.

Let’s face it, the playoff system can be forgiving, and often it is just a matter of making the playoffs and having enough momentum to have a chance at winning the title. Historically, Pumas has been able to do that, and in former Real Madrid player Michel, they finally seem to have a manager with a style of play that can make this happen. For now, Pumas is a team worth keeping an eye out for, but depending how the next few weeks go, this could be a team that cracks the top five in the favorites list real soon.
