Rubens Sambueza #14 of Toluca celebrates after scoring the second goal of his team during the first round match between Toluca and Morelia as part of the Torneo Apertura 2018 Liga MX at Nemesio Diez Stadium on July 22, 2018 in Toluca, Mexico.

Tigres Look to Break Their Undefeated Home Record Against Toluca

Tigres UANL return to the Estadio Universitario as they take on Toluca in one of the key matchups of Week of the 2018 Liga MX Apertura.

Tigres will look to bounce back after suffering their first defeat of the season at the hands of Cruz Azul. For the "Felinos", the match was an important one given that they were facing one of the better teams from the initial first two weeks of the season. Cruz Azul, though, played an intelligent match, and it took an error from defender Jorge Torres Nilo for the Cementeros to pounce and earn a deserved victory over Tigres.

Toluca, on the other hand, arrive to this match after an exciting 2-2 draw with Chivas Guadalajara. Last year's finalist have had a tough start to the season, but they've certainly got the talent to do more. The Diablos Rojos are currently eighth in the league table with just four points, and for them, this is their early statement game of the season.

SHARK BITES
  • Across their last five head-to-head league games, Toluca have just been able to score once.
  • Tigres have kept a clean sheet in their last three home matches in all competitions.
  • The total has gone UNDER in Tigres' last five Liga MX matches.

Andre-Pierre Gignac can make all the difference

Tactically speaking, there was a certain level of complexity behind Tigres's last match against Cruz Azul. They were facing arguably one of the more tactical sides in the tournament and a team that didn't mind giving up possession of the ball in place of having a solid defense. In that regard, a lot of Tigres's gameplay was dependent on their attackers. The problem here is they were without their main striker Andre-Pierre Gignac.

Tigres are noticeably bad without their star Frenchman. Since arriving to the club, in 12 matches without Gignac, Tigres have a record of one win, seven draws, and four defeats. Luckily for Tigres, Gignac's injury doesn't seem to be serious, and all signs point to the 32-year-old playing against Toluca. Gignac has scored two of the three goals Tigres have netted this season.

Record-breaking Tigres

If you've been following Tigres through the last two seasons, then you probably know that they currently hold an impeccable streak of games without losing at the Estadio Universitario. In total, it is now 29 consecutive league games without a defeat at home, equalzing Pachuca's undefeated streak from 2015 to 2017. Never has a team gone 30 consecutive games without a defeat at home in Liga MX, which means Tigres can make history with a win or a draw versus Toluca.

As a small reminder, the last time both of these teams met at the Estadio Universitario, Tigres obtained a comfortable 3-0 win over the Diablos Rojos.

Road woes for Toluca

If Tigres' undefeated streak at home isn't intimidating enough, it is worth mentioning that Toluca have been a nightmare to bet on in their last few matches away from home. While they've been able to score at least once in each of their last four matches as the visiting team, they have now gone five straight matches without a win away from home. Their only away match this season has been against Puebla, a game that was arguably winnable versus one of the weakest teams in the tournament.

Totals Bettors Might Consider The UNDER

Of the last 10 league clashes between these two teams, the UNDER has hit in a total of nine. The OddsShark Super Computer is predicting a Tigres UANL moneyline win with the total going UNDER.

Bettors should note: Across all competitions, the OVER has hit just once in the last five matches between these two teams at the Estadio Universitario.
