Red-hot Club América faces Xolos de Tijuana again

For the second time in a span of four days, Club América and Xolos de Tijuana clash, but this time in the Estadio Sportsbook, in action of Week 13 of the 2019 Liga MX Clausura.

Águilas and Fronterizos met as recently as Tuesday night when Club América defeated Tijuana 4-0 in the semifinals of the Copa MX. It was a dominant win from Miguel Herrera’s men, who took an early lead in the game and never looked back.

Club América clearly arrives in better form, having lost just once in its last nine matches across all competitions. Xolos, on the other hand, is still doing well despite its last defeat, winning six of its previous 10, including six straight without a defeat at home.

SHARK BITES
  • Club América has lost just once in its last six Liga MX matches.
  • Xolos de Tijuana has lost three of its last five matches across all competitions.
  • The total has hit the OVER in four of Xolos de Tijuana’s last six Liga MX home matches.

Tijuanas bogey team

Club América has been on fire recently, and after consecutive wins over rival Chivas Guadalajara in both Copa MX and Liga MX, the morale within the club is at an all-time high. Currently, Las Águilas are fourth in the standings with 22 points and are just a win away from clinching a place in the Liguilla.

All of this doesn’t bode well for Xolos de Tijuana, who were clearly overmatched in their last game against Las Águilas. In fact, América has always been a tough bet for the Fronterizos. In addition to going winless in each of their last five meetings vs Las Águilas, they’ve never really seemed to do well against Club America since gaining promotion to Liga MX back in 2011. To put it simply, in the team’s eight-year history in Liga MX, Tijuana has only been able to beat América on four occasions. That’s just four wins in 17 previous matches against Las Águilas.

But it wont be that easy for América

However, it hasn’t all been rainbows and unicorns for Club América through the last few weeks. In particular, their record away from home hasn’t always been the best. While it is true they haven’t lost in their last two away from the Estadio Azteca, their previous three before that were defeats. In total, they have just one win in their last five away matches across all competitions.

This a tad worrying if you are looking to side with Las Águilas, given that Xolos de Tijuana have been surprisingly steady at the Estadio Sportsbook. Under new manager Oscar Pareja, the Fronterizos have found it easy to grab positive results at home and arrive to this match unbeaten in their last eight home matches in all competitions.

OVER/UNDER analysis

The OVER/UNDER situation is a bit harder to predict. Club América has been on something of an offensive tear lately, scoring at least two goals in each of their last five matches. Because of that, the total has managed to hit the OVER in each of their last three matches, though it is worth noting that all three games were at the Estadio Azteca.

With Xolos de Tijuana, things have been a little different. Three of their last four matches have finished in the UNDER. It’s at home, however, where the Fronterizos have had a tendency to see more goals. Four of their last six Liga MX home matches have finished with a total in the OVER.

My take on the game...

Overall, it doesn’t matter how well Xolos de Tijuana has played at the Estadio Sportsbook, you have to side with Las Águilas in this one. I’ll also go with a total in the OVER. Oscar Pareja’s side has had a tendency to concede more than once on a regular basis, and I think against a team like América, they will have a tough time keeping a clean sheet.
