Xolos de Tijuana vs Puebla Betting Odds Preview

Tijuana vs Puebla Betting Odds Preview Liga MX

In a game that could decide the last invitee to the 2019 Liga MX Clausura playoffs, Xolos de Tijuana play host to Puebla at the Estadio Caliente.

For the Fronterizos, it's as simple as getting a win. Xolos de Tijuana need a victory in their last game of the regular season to officially clinch their place in the 2019 Liga MX Clausura Liguilla. Oscar Pareja's men find themselves within touching distance of completing their first major objective after beating Monarcas Morelia 4-1 in their last game and moving up eighth in the standings with 25 points.

Puebla, however, will be no slouch for Tijuana. Since the arrival of new manager Jose Luis Sanchez Sola, La Franja have regularly found themselves in the top-half of the league table. Now, with their season on the line, the only result that works for them is a win if they want to be part of the top eight teams that make the playoffs.

  • Xolos de Tijuana has just one win in its last six Liga MX home games.
  • Four of Puebla's last six away games across all competitions has finished in the UNDER.
  • Puebla has won four of its last six Liga MX games away from home.

Tijuana's Inconsistencies are There to be Seen

While it is true that Xolos de Tijuana currently find themselves in a favorable position and one in which they control their own destiny, the fact of the matter is that the Fronterizos have been something of a hit or a miss this season. In fact, after a start to the season that saw Tijuana be one of the best teams in the Clausura, they haven't won consecutive Liga MX games since Week 9.

Where Tijuana's inconsistencies have been most obvious is away from home, which translates to good news for Xolos considering this game will played at the Estadio Caliente. Prior to their 2-1 defeat to Lobos BUAP two weeks ago at the Caliente, Xolos had won five straight Liga MX games at home.

Puebla are Usually a Strong Side Away From Home

On the opposite side of things. what has kept Puebla alive in this 2019 Liga MX Clausura has been their consistency away from home. If Xolos de Tijuana is celebrating that this game will be played at the Estadio Caliente, so is Puebla. La Franja have been a superb away team this season and are currently the fourth best in the campaign. In total, Puebla have just one defeat in their last seven Liga MX away games and only two away defeats all season.

That said, if Puebla are to make the Liguilla, they are going to need to make a bit of history. Since Tijuana's promotion to Liga MX, La Franja have only been able to beat Tijuana once at the Estadio Caliente. That's just one win in eight visits to Tijuana's home ground.

Head-to-head trends

As far as other noticeable trends between these two teams in recent head-to-head meetings, there are a couple worth mentioning. For starters, Tijuana has had the upper hand, as they haven't lost in their last six games versus Puebla across all competitions. They've also won their last three at home against La Franja. In the case of scoring, the UNDER has been one of the smarter bets. Each of the last five meetings between Tijuana and Puebla have finished with a total in the UNDER.

My Take on the Game

As good as Puebla has been away from home, I find it difficult to believe they can break their negative streak at the Estadio Caliente. However, I also think that Tijuana's inconsistency will continue until the very end. For that reason, I'm going to go with a draw in this match. I'm also going with a total in the UNDER, given the lack of scoring of these two teams across their last few meetings.
