Miguel Herrera Pumas UNAM vs Club América Betting Odds Preview Liga MX soccer Mexico

Club América, Miguel Herrera have been dominant over Pumas

Club América will look to get back on track as it visits crosstown rival Pumas UNAM in Week 7 of the 2019 Liga MX Clausura.

Las Águilas have struggled of late and arrive to this game on the back of a 3-0 defeat to Club León. The defending champs were embarrassed at the Estadio Azteca in what turned out to be their first home defeat since March of last year. On Sunday, they’ll be taking on a Pumas UNAM team that has been trending up ever since parting ways with manager David Patiño. The Universitarios have won two of their last three matches across all competitions after beginning the season with just one win in their first six.

SHARK BITES

  • Pumas UNAM is unbeaten in its last six Liga MX matches at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
  • Four of the last five head-to-head meetings between Club América and Pumas UNAM have finished in the OVER.

Club América has owned Pumas of late

It might be too early to start panicking, but it is now two defeats in three Liga MX matches for Club América. Las Águilas were a huge letdown last week against Club León, and things won’t get any easier in a high-caliber matchup against Pumas UNAM.

Club América, though, has traditionally done well against its city rival, and you don’t have to go very far to see just how dominant this team has been. Recently, these clubs met in the semifinals of the 2018 Liga MX Apertura, and Las Águilas ended up cruising to a 7-2 aggregate victory.

In total, Club América comes into this game having gone unbeaten in its last 11 Liga MX matches vs Pumas. Seven of those were América victories. Moreover, they’ve done an excellent job at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario, where Las Águilas haven’t lost a game in their last seven visits to Pumas’ home ground.

Miguel Herreras record in Clásicos is still going strong

The other noteworthy statistic to take into account for this match involves Club América coach Miguel Herrera. Every time Club América is involved in a Clásico, be it against Cruz Azul, Chivas Guadalajara or Pumas UNAM, we have to talk about Herrera’s immaculate record against rival teams. Since Herrera began his second stint with Las Águilas, the 50-year-old hasn’t lost a single Clásico. That’s zero defeats against rival teams in more than five years. In particular, Pumas is one of the teams Herrera is especially dominant against. As coach of Las Águilas, Herrera has won a total of 10 times against the Universitarios.

In fact, Herrera’s record in Clásicos is so good, he is on the verge of making history. When it comes to Clásicos, he is just one win away from becoming the winningest coach in Liga MX history.

Nico Castillos return

Of course, you don’t need any telling to know that this is something of a grudge match for Pumas UNAM. Beyond the fact that Club América is a crosstown rival and has had their number in recent seasons, there is also the added factor of Nico Castillo. The Chilean striker is regarded as one of Pumas UNAM’s best strikers in recent time, but controversially decided to return to Mexico to play for Club América after a failed stint in Europe. Castillo has already promised he won’t celebrate if he scores against his former club, but that probably won’t stop Pumas fans from showing their disdain toward the Chilean the instant he takes the field.

As for what kind of impact Castillo may have on the game, odds are that we are going to see goals either way.  Four of the last five meetings between these two clubs have finished in the OVER, as well as 10 of the last 12.

My take on the game...

It’s true that Pumas UNAM has looked like a better side under new manager Bruno Marioni, but I think it’s too early to think they can take down a team like Club América. I’m going with a win for Las Águilas.
