Renato Ibarra Veracruz vs Club America Game Preview

Club América Looks for a Strong Finish Against Veracruz

Club América will look to finish its regular season on a high note as they visit Veracruz at the Estadio Luis "Pirata" Fuente.

Las Águilas has its eyes set on the 2019 Liga MX Clausura Playoffs but first would like to finish the regular season as one of the top seeds. Currently, América is seventh in the league table with 26 points and the highest they can potentially finish is fourth.

Against Veracruz, Miguel Herrera's men will be facing arguably the worst team in Liga MX. The Tiburones Rojos have been relegated for more than a month now, and as you might expect, have nothing to play for here but honor.

SHARK BITES
  • Veracruz has gone winless in each of its last nine matches across all competitions.
  • Five of Veracruz's last six Liga MX matches have finished with a total in the UNDER, including its last two at the Estadio Luis "Pirata" Fuente.
  • Club América has lost just twice in its last 10 matches across all competitions, including four Liga MX victories.

The Worst of the Worst

Veracruz have made history this season but for all the wrong reasons. When it's all said and done, the Tiburones Rojos will have the worst season in the history of Liga MX. At the moment, Veracruz are last in the league table with zero points. You heard that right, zero points. In addition to not having won a single game this Clausura, the Tiburones Rojos were docked points earlier in the season as punishment for breaking transfer rules. However, facing the most winning team in Liga MX history is all the motivation Veracruz may need. The Tiburones Rojos were relegated rather early in the season, which means the players might want to give their fans a proper Liga MX send off by beating the defending champions.

Veracruz haven't Beaten Las Águilas in a Long Time

Beating Club América, though, is something the Tiburones Rojos haven't done in years. Veracruz has been so bad, that the last time they beat Club América in Liga MX was four years ago in the 2015 Liga MX Apertura. In total, coupled with Copa MX games, Veracruz hasn't been able to beat Las Águilas in 10 straight games. Out of those 10 matches, Club América won six, although only two of them came at the Estadio Luis "Pirata" Fuente.

How Many Goals will América Win by?

If a Club América win looks like a foregone conclusion, the question then becomes by how many goals will Las Águilas win by? For starters, Club América won each of its last three meetings versus the Tiburones Rojos by exactly three goals, which means each of those three matches finished with a total in the OVER.

That said, though Veracruz comes in to this game having lost each of its last six Liga MX matches, only two of those actually hit the OVER. Similarly, three of Club América's last four Liga MX matches have finished in the UNDER.

Where you can give the OVER the upper hand here is when Club América plays away from home. Las Águilas has scored at least two goals in four of its last five away matches, with three of those finishing in the OVER.

My Take on the Game

A Veracruz victory is completely out of the question. From the start, I expect Club América to go in search of the win, given just how important seeding tends to be in the Liguilla. Nonetheless, something tells me this game will be a lot closer than most expect, which is why the UNDER seems like an intriguing bet. Nobody is saying Veracruz will pull some sort of surprise, but they have managed to look competitive in five of their last six defeats, keeping it close against teams like Necaxa, Club León and Monterrey.
