Portugal Has Not Beaten France Since 1975 Heading Into Euro Final

The stage is set for the Euro 2016 Final, where Portugal will take on the French hosts in Paris on Sunday. The Portuguese got by the dark horse Wales in their semifinal while France stunned the 2014 World Cup winners in theirs.

  • When hosting, France has never lost an international tournament (1998 World Cup, 1984 Euro).
  • France has a 10 match winning streak against Portugal spanning back to 1975.
  • The goal total has been 2 or more in 12 of 14 Euro Finals.

France’s win over Germany was the product of some very convenient calls. They were completely outplayed by the Germans for the first 44 minutes until Bastian Schweinsteiger was called for a questionable intentional handball in the penalty area. He was carded for the offense and France converted the dot shot. This play totally changed the dynamic of the game and forced Germany to attack heavily and left them open to the counter.

All this said, however, France is the overwhelming favorite at EVEN at online sportsbook Bovada and would be well upset if Portugal came away with the hardware.

I have not given Portugal credit for anything they’ve done this entire tournament – so why start now. Their 2-0 triumph over Wales was their first win in regular time at these Euros. They came out of the easier of the two brackets and had a much less competitive semifinal than France. It is not out of the realm of possibility for the Portuguese to surprise the French – but it’s not likely.

Portugal comes in as the +345 underdog to put France away in regular time and based on their history at Euro 2016, that’s a hell of a long shot.

France has been playing their rope-a-dope style pretty effectively all tournament and it's likely Portugal is lured into this trap. Look for Portugal and Ronaldo to get chances early but for France to counter with their deadly attack – the total of two is in serious danger.
