Premier League Weekend Preview: EPL is Back, Baby

The one downside of the international break is that Premier League action goes on hiatus for two weeks and punters – like me – who like to bet league footy have to just sit patiently and wait. That wait is almost over, though, as we have a full slate of top-flight English football league games this weekend.

This column is an experiment to see if there’s any interest in a weekly EPL preview, highlighting the best games and my favorite bets of the week. If this is something you want, make sure to share this article with anyone you know that bets football so I can make writing it a weekly priority.

With all that said, here goes.

Fixtures of the week

Chelsea vs Leicester City: The Foxes have struggled mightily out of the gate and have a really good chance at topping Chelsea’s 2015-16 campaign for the worst title defense in the history of the Premier League.

Chelsea currently sits seventh in the table with 13 points and will be the heavy favorite coming into their matchup with Leicester this Saturday. The Blue have not played at Stamford Bridge in about a month so the fans will be hungry for a dubby. Expect Antonio Conte to put some fire under his team’s belly this weekend and expect guys like Diego Costa and Eden Hazard to come out firing.

Manchester City vs Everton: Man City was dealt a serious blow by Tottenham in their last match in a 2-0 loss to Spurs in what was Pep Guardiola’s first result with his new club that was something other than a win. City will be one of the biggest favorites of the whole slate this weekend as they look to pound Everton on their home pitch and add to their lead in the Premier League.

Liverpool vs Manchester United: This Monday fixture has got to be the match of the week. United has just one win in their last four games and should be a desperate squad at Anfield. Liverpool was incredibly inconsistent in the early stages of the campaign but has settled down and is playing some of the best footy in the entire league. They are on pace to finish in the top four – which was one of my best bets heading into the season – and I couldn’t be happier.

Best Bets

Tottenham Moneyline -145: My Spurs sit second on the table right now and everything is right with the world. They were brilliant in their shocker against Man City and have had stretches this season where they’ve been untouchable. Anything less than three points against West Bromwich Albion this weekend will be an absolute disappointment for the Yid army.

Although they drew both of their Premier League matches last season, Spurs have lost just one contest against West Brom in their last 13 meetings. Hedging your bet with a draw could be a smart move but I think the only unbeaten team left in the league rolls this week. Spurs win 2-0 #COYS

Man City/Everton OVER 3: This one’s simple. The Toffees leave themselves open to attack with their high-pressure tactics and City is lethal on the counter. Goals could absolutely tumble out of this one.

Sunderland PICK +165: Sunderland takes on fellow basement-dweller Stoke this weekend with both teams looking for their first victories of the season. Sunderland went 1-1-0 against Stoke in the 2015-16 campaign and the Potters have been dreadful at Bet 365 Stadium as they've given up a total of eight goals in their last two Premier League games at home.

Going with the PICK here means you get your money back if these teams draw and for my money, this is one of the closest contests on the docket this week, despite the garbage quality of both sides involved. Even if Stoke squeaks it out, you’re not losing your shirt on this one – take the value.

If you want to let me know what you think of my picks this week, give me a shout on Twitter @robtrocity or leave a comment in the section below. Good luck on all your bets this weekend, and cheers to another round of the best club footy on the planet.
