Week 28 Premier League Preview: What to do With Wenger

With the quarters of the FA Cup throwing a wrench in the Premier League schedule, we have a pretty light slate this weekend that will feature four games and just one team that currently resides in the top six. That doesn’t mean that there’s not lots to talk about, though, so let’s get to it and kick things off with some juicy, juicy rumors.

Wenger Under Fire at the Emirates

Let’s start with the most obvious and pressing matter, what to do with Arsene Wenger. The Arsenal legend is growing old with fans – as well as in age – and it looks like the clock is ticking on his tenure at the Emirates after an embarrassing ousting from Champions League and a horrible run in the Premier League that’s seen the Gunners lose three of their last four fixtures. Sportsbooks have odds up for whether the 67-year-old will be back on the Gunners’ sideline for Day 1 of the 2017-18 Premier League season, with the No option quickly gaining traction. At the time of writing, it had dropped to -350, with the Yes option coming back at +250.

Wenger has had a long leash because he always seems to get his team into Champions League but with fans starting to call for blood, the man who’s been patrolling the Arsenal sideline for 21 years could be on his last legs.

Will Arsene Wenger be Arsenal's Manager on Day 1 of the 2017-18 EPL Season
  • No -350
  • Yes +250

Rooney's Run at Old Trafford Over?

Other rumors have speculated that Wayne Rooney could make a return to the place his Premier League career started with a summer transfer to Everton. It seems unlikely that Rooney would leave Old Trafford when he’s still seeing significant minutes and continuing to pile on his record-setting club goal tally but it’s fun to pretend and it’s even more fun to gamble. If you’re feeling up to the risk sportsbooks are offering a +163 line for the 13-year United man to head back to Goodison Park and a +120 line for him to remain a Red Devil. For those feeling ambitious, the book is also offering a +4000 line for the suddenly full-headed forward to wind up in the Citizens’ baby blue.

Wayne Rooney: Club after the Summer Transfer Window
  • Manchester United +120
  • Everton +163
  • Any Chinese Club +225
  • Any MLS Club +2500
  • Manchester City +4000
Odds as of March 8

Other Thoughts

The majority of good football will be played in FA competition this weekend but with Everton just four points up on West Brom, they’ll be highly motivated to snag three points at home Saturday and I think they do it in impressive fashion. West Brom has been caught out a few times this season by skilled passing and the Toffees’ middies have been showing the last few weeks that they can pick out just about any pass they want. Everton should make the West Brom backline look foolish this weekend and it could be a game in which Lukaku bags a few goals. With that being the case, it’s an excellent time to back the Belgian to win the EPL Golden Boot as he’s not had a big scoring outburst for a while and he’ll lose a bucket of value if he gets a brace or a hat trick in Week 28.

Hull and Swansea should provide a cracker as well with both teams jockeying in and out of the relegation zone. These teams have combined to concede more goals than any other two clubs in the EPL this year so you can expect goals in this one and you’re probably set to take the OVER 2.5. If you’re feeling brazen, you could reach for a prop of OVER 3.5 or more as it’s likely this one ends up with a scoreline of something like 3-2.
